stouffville suntribune thursday oct 23 2003 7 roaming around with jim thomas some candidates made grade at debate over the past 52 years ive attended hundreds even thou sands of council meetings ive seen mayors reeves deputy- reeves and councillors come and go most left their mark those of us fortunate to live here appreciate what we have first a village and now a town secondtonone in ontario little wonder nonresidents who a halfcentury ago con sidered stoufiville out in the sticks are breaking down our doors to get in and why not after all in many respects were still rural at the same time as the crow flies via hwy 404 were only 30 minutes from the innercity we enjoy the best of both worlds problem is others want to share what we already have but those already here want to keep all others out i reached that conclusion after attending an allcandidates meeting monday at stouffville district secondary school it was a rehash of what id heard three years before and three years before that it isnt going to happen like it or not stoufiville will grow and continue to grow at a rate greater than even politicians perceive and i hope it does for the town i see today is better than the village i saw yester day however if the atmos phere of mondays meeting was an indication most would not agree in all honesty id serious ly considered rahning myself in ward 4 fact is i took up an hour of clerk michele kennedys valuable time before accepting nom ination papers but i changed my mind and im glad i did for any sign of a prodevelopment stance would have seen me booed off the stage id have died a thousand deaths on monday most of the candidates escaped the hangmans noose the audience of about 400 was patient even polite on occasions it applauded so who came out on top on a score of one to 10 each deserved a five there were no real winners or losers but several surprises randy mole casting an eye on the mayors chair had elec tors eating out of his hand his honest and sometimes humourous comments were well received he spoke at the level of his listeners making statements they understood his knowledge on occasions caught adversaries off guards mak ing them scramble for facts and figures i gave him an a on the nights proceedings mayoralty candidates sue sherban and steve pliakes were runnersup even with a less than adequate sound system mrs sherbaris voice came through clearly she also responded well to questions mr pliakes presented a solid mayoralty look but wavered badly on a pro or con development stand i gave both bs council candidates in wards 1 ken ferdinands and 3 clyde smith have been acclaimed enough said phil bannon running against an experienced mark carroll in ward 2 was another surprise he like mr mole touched on issues the audience could relate to such as- youth problems police and roads he drew appreciative applause for his full- time commitment promise i gave him an a mr carroll stressed experience as an important factor but declined to out line what he achieved over the past six years his mark was a b soud believable answers what fred robbins of ward 4 lacked in presentation he replaced with solid believable answers his record of atten- dance at meetings of council and his work as a community volunteer proved impressive i gave him a bplus suzanne hilton has also been a regular council meeting attendee but she spoke over the heads of her audience and much of what she said no one could hear she received a b- minus jim priebe regurgitated the old pickering airport proj ect a federal matter jn another municipality he admitted non attendance at meetings of council i gave him a c in ward 5 harry bowes accomplishments speak for them- selves hes also a committed volunteer but his presentation was vastly overshadowed by opponent brenda lobraico whose clear resounding voice caught everyones attention i gave her an a bowes and opponent john relf each a b i liked mr relf s call for a town police station in ward 6 the big surprise was ron snider a johnny-come- lately in the election campaign he far outdistanced rivals owen craig and jim hobbs he earned an a mr craig and mr hobbs both bs rob hargrave a fourth candidate couldnt attend his place was taken by sister tanis thats how i saw it and heard it fortunately i didnt have to grade myself jim thomas is a stoujfville resident who has written for areanewspapersfor
