ive lost it i lost my ability to think posi tively and lost confidence in my game as a result i lost matches this is one of those moments im sitting here on my hotel balcony in mallorca spain the morning after a disappointing tournament where we lost all three matches were supposed to practise today a bonus practice for not having done well in the event my partner reaggravated his injured leg in practice before the tourna ment so it will just be me out there on the court ive got to admit im not feeling very moti vated it reminds me how much things have changed i used to be referred to as the kid on the canadian beach tour i was 19 and so keen on beach volleyball i would hang out at the beach courts all day and just play with anyone who wanted to i suppose thats the transfor mation from beach rat to beach pro from a rookie athlete who couldnt get enough to a veteran player who has had enough i remember the first time i rep resented canada at an interna tional event in almeria spain in 1992 my heart was pounding so hard i was almost trembling and that was only at the technical meeting the night before the event i was so giddy with excite- 1 lj z jw w h ib tji b h jcfrvatt of sunscreen later ifind myself at another tournament in spain my 109th international event but this time the feeling is quite different at the technical meeting the night before the event i could hardly stop yawning partly because of a bit of jet lag but mainly because i found it boring and before our first match the next day i needed to blow back a couple of energy drinks to get up for the game partly because my partner had an injury setback in practice the day before and was in no shape to go 100 per cent but mainly because i was discour aged and a bit fed up with our dis appointing season we didnt compete very well at this tournament and my partners injury situation isnt clearing up as quickly as we hoped it would so perhaps thats why im having this bitter moment as i write this journal entry but thafs kind of why i keep this journal to write down all my thoughts sort through all the distractions and the negative feel ings and find some answers despite my first few journal entries published in this paper where the theme was fairly posi tive and i talked about the atti tude athletes such as myself need to have there are instances when that positive approach some times gets lost this was one of those instances but reflecting on me youthful enthusiasm i once had for this sport has helped me find an answer to my troubles today it reminds me just how much i actually enjoy being a part of this sport it reminds me to play this game not for the world rank ing points not for the money and not even for the chance at olympic gold it reminds me there are days when i simply should be playing this game for the same reason i played with passersby on the beaches of toronto as a kid because i love it this is one of those days markheeseisanauroraresidentaspiring to
