none can equal the adulation awaiting him saturday oh that day athletic immortality will be confirmed when in the presence of his peers the stouffville resident will be installed in the sarnia lambton hall of fame the honour announced in may recognizes mitros out- standing accomplishments in competitive track and field including being the firstever lambton county native to break the fourminute mile this happened in 1988 when he stopped the clock at three minutes and 59 seconds three years later in traverse city michigan he would better this mark by one minute and 59 seconds a sarnia resident until 1991 mitro attended st patricks secondary school where he participated in both track and field and basketball running skills took time to develop but track and field recogni tion didnt occur over night in grade 9 i joined the crosscountry team and came in 104th he recalled but i enjoyed it just the same the next year he pulled out all the stops and placed second in grade 12 he began con centrating on the mile a focus thatpaid off he never looked back harvey mitro stouffville resi dent niade his mark in middle and long distance running in ensuing years while still living in sarnia mitro won seven provincial titles in mid dle distance running ranging from 800 to 1500 metres plus five ontario university cham pionships while enrolled as a kinesiology student at the university of waterloo earned many awards over a period of li years harvey established amazing results as follows 1987 ontario university record in 100m and three time all- canadian in track and field at the university of waterloo 1988 university of waterloo athlete of the year and first sarnia resident to break the fourminute mile in abbotsford bc 1990 member of canadas national team for winning the 1500m in ireland and france and personal best in the mile at traverse city michigan 1991 canadian indoor 300m champion and a 1500m silver medallist 1998 teamed up with stouffvilles sue wise to organize an allcanadian run ning team breaking the guinness book of world records for 100 by one mile relay 1999 organized an all- womens team that estab lished a world record for- the 100 by one mile relay gives credit to those who coached him the 6foot4 170pound miler says he owes everything to five coaches who worked with him unstintingly over the years theyre worth their weight in gold he says without any one of them i wouldnt be where i am today it was while part of the canadian track and field team in ireland that mitro met and later married nicole the love of his life before moving to stouffville in august of last year they lived in scarborough the couple has two sons liam 10 and alexander five their children attend glad park public school mitro operates his own fit- ness consulting business its especially exciting says mitro that his wfe children parents brothers and five coaches will attend the sarnia lambton hall of fame induc tion itll be the highlight of my life he states one of many atom clippers take silver in markham hockey tournament the stouffville atom clippers earned a second- place finish at the recent markham w a x e r s tournament after a 21 overtime loss to tnt in the final wesley brown accounted for the lone clippers goal while steven tait drew an assist in reaching the final the clippers won their first game over pickering 5- 1 connor cadaret scored twice while matthew miniacci curtis crago and chris smith added singles tait and robbie acton each had an assist stouffville received two goals from josh machesney and singles from cadaret tait brown and elise acton to rout bradford 61 robbie acton and michael bourgeois drew assists mayo brown ignite onslaught facing meadowvale in their next game the clippers got a twogoal twoassist effort from dalton mayo and two goals from wesley brown en route to a 93 win tait bourgeois machesney and crago each contributed a goal and assist while cadaret notched the other marker miniaci was credited with two assists while lyndsay burrows smith bourgeois and brown added singles the victory enabled the clippers to advance to the semifinals where they edged whitby 43 tait recorded the hat trick for stouffville and miniaci added the other goal robbie acton had two assists singles went to machesney and burrows 00 kyle pontone and travis gibbs shared netminding duties during the tourna ment staff photojim mason all in a day s work put hockey great ron ellis was in stouffville last thursday working out at pulse total fitness and aerobic centre under the supervision of personal trainer and friend bob ruffo of ballantrae fjlis played 16 seasons for the toronto maple leafs he was on thelast toronto team to win a stanley cup in 1967 and was a member of team canada that defeated the soviet union in the famed series of 1972 he now lives in caledon and works at the hockey hall of fame in toronto rookie enjoying life in jr a maybe the most pleasant surprise on this years stouffville spirit roster didnt have to travel far to make an impres sion jake van allen admits he didnt show well at the provincial junior a hockey league teams spring camp but this fall the 16yearold from just down hwy 48 in dickson hill has been impressive this was where i wanted to play said the product of the don mills flyers and markham waxers minor hockey programs drafted by the owen sound platers in this years ontario hockey league draft he split the weekend of the spirit spring camp between stouffville and owen sound i was only at spirit camp the one day and i didnt have a lot of energy the grade 11 student at stouffville district secondary school said van allen has six points including a gamewinning goal in eight games i like our team a lot he said weve got a lot of speed and scorers up front im really enjoying playing with better players at a higher level here the spirit 4400 has a rare thursday off tonight it plays couchiching in orillia tomorrow and hosts newmarket saturday at 730 pm the spirit split a pair of weekend games running its unbeaten streak to four friday with a 32 overtime win in jake van allen dickson hill resident has six points early in
