writer the burden has become too much for the taylor family it is a struggle to cope with the 24- hour care required by daughter tammy 34 disabled in a horseback riding acci dent five years ago she has qualified for an assistedliv ing bed but due to a lack of provincial funding no beds are available shes on the waiting list a nine- year waiting list were desperate we just cant look after tammy on our own anymore tammys father dave taylor said my wife suffered with breast cancer and now she needs a hip replacement she has a hard time getting around its just become too hard he sold his successful butcher shop taysons meats in aurora in may 2002 to care for his wife sylvia and tammy tammys sister tasha has put her life on hold to look after her big sister a sit uation that cant continue her dad said tasha has got to get her life togethen shes 27 and has had a real tough road tammy is her big sister and was her mentor but now its the other way around after the july 1998 accident in british columbia tammy remained in a coma for seven months the family fought for months to find a bed for her in ontario with oak ridges mpp frank klees and southlake regional health centre president dan gamere working together to bring tammy homa i she spent more than two years in rehabilitation hospitals improving slowly until she was well enough to come home v we wanted met home mr taylor said they told us all along she would never get as far as she has and she con tinued to improve when she got home we could never have done it at all staff photosjoerd witteveen tammy taylor shown with her dog tiki was injured in a horseback riding accident parents dave and sylvia in background have been told it could take nine years to place her in an assist edliving facility without the great friends who have stuck by us and supported us but sylvias failing health and the daytoday strain of tammys care has forced her family to find a facility that can provide the care she needs on afull- time basis after researching several assistedliv ing homes across ontario the taylors settled on one run by the community head injury resource services chirs in toronto there were ones in barrie london hamilton all over mr taylor said we have to be close to tammy but we dont want to move unless we have to we ihave already spent the money to make the house wheelchair accessible and we really dont want to go through that again and every place said the same thing the wait is years five seven 10 all much too long michelle gianforcaro an intake serv ices worker at atoronto facility said it all boils down to money all our funding depends on the ministry of health and longterm care and we cant expand without it she explained adding chirs manages about 50 beds in two locations its not like a hospital where theres turnover this is longterm care there are more than 100 people on the facilitys wait list she said its very hard i know the family is at a loss trying to keep it together we advocate for more money to get people off the waiting list but ifs out of our control mr taylor was told the bill would be about 400 a day if he paid it himself ministry of health officials did not return a call by press time but mpp klees remembers tammy theres no doubt there is a big bur den on the family he said there was a time they didnt know if they would get their daughter back they have a great deal of strength to have come so far and it is very difficult to maintain 24hour care he promised to workwith the taylors exploring options ahcj other opportuni- tiesforaid this is really an ongoing problem there are limited resources to go around and we do the best we can to stretch them out he said we have put more money into assistedliving programs than any other government and were committed to dqingniore but it may not be enough for the taylors we cant wait years if theres no funding for five or seven years what the heck are we supposed to do
