commit tee of stouffville missionary church council gave unanimous support to a request to have the municipality part ner with igoma a city at the south end of lake victoria in tanzania the goal is to have residents of whitchurchstouffville improve the quality of life in igoma the need is very real larry simpson church member and ballantrae vegetable grower told council last week in june mr simpson and 16 other residents of wwtchurchstouffville and markham spent a month on a humani tarian project in the igoma area its an agricultural subsistence economy with 80 per cent of the popu lation involved in primitive farming mr simpson said tools and equip ment for even the simplest trades or farming if available at all are substan dard at best what we throw away would be like gold to them average annual income 300 wwtchurchstouffville has a popu lation of 22000 there are 42000 people in igoma while the average household income in wwtchurchstouffville is 900000 its only 300 in igoma residents of igoma some dying of aids have just welcomed their first doctor however the doctor is only able to come to igoma twice aweek in igoma electricity and clean water are sporadic and life is fragile in the african village for every 1000 babies born in igoma 100 die in their first year mr simpson told council while in igoma the 16member group from wwtchurchstouffville and markham helped build a medical cen tre a doctor can visit twice a week a nurse will be available full time and with help from wwtchurchstouffville a dis pensary for basic drugs will open medical equipment is needed as soon as possible and we intend to pro vide it as soon as funds are available mr simpson said tws is a partnerswp that can make a sigwficant difference for the people of igoma he added youth can be sponsored as well the youth in igoma are being offered training in a nearby city provid ing funding is available training in plumbing masonry electrical carpen try computers and food services is offered mr simpson told council the youth of igoma can be sponsored by people here its hoped individual families neighbourhoods service clubs schools and other churches will support the people of
