8 stouffville suntribune thursday aug 21 2003 police want to shut down bawdy houses jfrwnpagtei regional police det michael klimrri j in january there vere 182 known bawdy houses in york region now there are 132 we dont want them here we will shut them down det klimrri said theres a big difference between a body rub parlour and a spa det const graham point ed out places with a registered mas sage therapist rmt in place are legitimate said detconst graham any place with a rmt is usu ally legitimate earlier this year town of markham officials and york regional police raided seven massage parlours and laid a total of 32 bylaw violation charges at five locations including one on hwy7 charges included violations concerning customer and atten dant nudity interior doors with no windows and being open without a licence to operate on energysaving day litlerch j i quantities last cotton pj pj bottom 6 by hannelore volpe staff writer the blackout lent a new sense of urgency to this years walk and bike to work day tuesday town staff where challenged to cre ate even more creative ways of saving electricity this year with town buildings and offices already in a save it now mode to comply with the provinces direc tive for all larger power users to reduce energy consumption by 50 per cent unnecessary lights and equipment are turned off or down and air conditioner settings were jacked up from 23 to 28 c in town buildings residents seem to be keeping an eye on the towns energysaving efforts when a contractor used a powerful hose for three hours or more to wash down baker street during road construction tuesday a resident phoned the town and the suntribune town staff were called to the scene shortly after to investigate mayor wayne emmerson said fifty million people have been affected by the aug 14 power outage said councillor mark carroll who initi ated walk and bike to work day last year i would like to see a challenge go out to other companies in town he said he also wants residents to use these energysaving strategies at home this power outage is just the start of infrastructure problems counculor carroll believes york region has a five per cent growth rate each year our infrastructure is not able to keep up with development about 65 per cent of town staff took part in the walk and bike to work event last year staff also turned off lights turned off computers when not in use and turned up air conditioning temper atures but that is all being done already noted fitness supervisor barb armstrong who has helped to organize the event for the past two years she urged people to be extra creative and noted the importance of conserving was highlighted with the outages one staff member is probably still rubbing on the foot liniment after walk ing to work from 430 am others biked or walked to tuesdays council meeting in tiie meantime the town is replac ing worn heating and cooling systems with more efficient models at the ball- antrae and lemcnville community centres talks are ongoing with staff in other municipalities for more ideas on saving energy including the use of biodiesel fuels
