family questionable role models monarchists and those readers of this newspaper who dont care whether the queen reigns over us or not will be jubilant to hear of the recent shenanigans of the royal family prince charles it is reported in the newspa pers is trying to have his polo ponies and equipment declared taxdeductible because the prince claims he uses them in events to raise charitable contributions taking a leaf from the old mans book princes william and harry will be granted 23 million british pounds from the famous diana fund that was set up soon after her death to assist abused people landmine victims and refugees reports like these demonstrate clearly what kind of people will be models for people in canada and the commonwealth in the future james pb kelly markham harry potter book takes page from ontario governments my son just finished reading harry potter and the order of the phoenix so i read it too imagine my surprise when i started reading the educational decree made by the ministry that was represented by character dolores umbridge the ministry stated these decrees were supposed to improve education at hogwarts harrys school of wizardry but in reality the decrees were political having nothing to do with the quality of education the decrees were designed to harass and intimidate any staff member disagreeing with the ministry and to make students conform to bureaucratic principles that did nothing to help them learn author jk rowling surely must have gained her inspiration from the ontario gov ernments manufactured crisis in education il insecticide sprayed july 24 im absolutely shocked the york region public health department would consider sending pesticide fogging trucks into our neighbourhoods to combat west nile virus the statement that spraying malathion is safe when used properly is questionable to say theleast the health department seems to base its conclusion on information obtained from the pesticide management regulatory agency a division of health canada this agency has repeatedly been criticized by the auditor general among others for its failures in regu lating pesticides a major portion of the agencys funding is derived from registering pesticides the agencys scientists know the pesticide industry pays a large portion of their salaries malathion is a member of the organophos- phate pesticide family these chemicals have been implicated as being neurotoxins partic ularly to children malathion also suppresses the immune system something you definitely do not want to do to people exposed to west nile virus malathion can be tracked into houses and stay in carpets for months concerns about malathion are sufficient that several provinces have already opted against chemical fogging for mosquito control dr sheela basrur torontos medical officer of health said while she wont rule out any approach we should bear in mind malathion is hopelessly ineffective the united states centers for disease control and prevention says spraying pesticides intended to kill adult mosquitoes is usually the least efficient mos quito control regrettably york region is willing to gamble with the health of children asthmatics chem ically sensitive individuals and the rest of us by implementing this questionable policy peter walling newmarket editor in chief advertising director debora kelly retail flyer key to future i spent my youth in southern ontario where lake erie the thames river and a huge swamp were enchanted places for fishing watching birds and catching frogs those experiences helped shape who i am which is why a recent report on climate change in the region is so distressing the report prepared by the usbased union of concerned scientists ucs and my foundation examines what will happen to the great lakes region if serious action is not taken and heattrapping gases from burning fossil fuels continue to build up in the atmosphere worsening global warming already on my trips to toronto in the sum mer i cannot get over the smog blanketing the city according to the twoyear ucs study this smog is expected to intensify throughout the great lakes many urban areas warmer temperatures enhance the cre ation of smog which exacerbates respiratory illnesses in ontario alone the health costs associated with this pollution exceed 1 billion each year water levels in ontarios many lakes are also expected to drop and soil moisture in the region could decrease by as much as 30 per cent this century these changes would cause small streams to dry up and damage water quality they would also forever alter the regionsvvildiife and habitat whether ontario or bangladesh the causes of global warming are the same excessive con sumption of fossil fuels ignoring or trying to merely adapt to global warming will only make it worse consider this as temperatures rise air conditioners will work harder and more often this will require more electricity which means more fossil fuels will be burned its a vicious cycle thats why reducing the amount of fossil fuels we burn is so important its the most direct way to reduce air pollution and the buildup of heattrapping gasses in our atmos phere recently i had the opportunity to speak in several southern ontario cities everywhere i- went people expressed grave concerns about the future of southern ontarios environment they want their children to have the same quality of life and opportunities they had we may still be able to give them those opportuni ties if we take action now to discuss this topic with others visit the discussion
