ransberry staff writer astouffville couple is hop ing a 60000 investment from the town will save a pond at the back of their cam fella boulevard property runoff from the northern part westfield estates has caused such a silting problem their pond is shrinking said john michaluk when mr michaluk and wife carol ann ross bought the property 12 ago the pond covered half an acre its less than half that size now bull rushes cat tails and other vegetation are taking over the pond is also losing depth- when we moved 12 years ago it was 1 1 foot deep said mr michaluk today i can walk out into the middle and the waters only up to my knees after a sevenyear struggle with the municipality the fight is finally over last week whitchurchstouffville coun cil agreed to foot the rehabili tation bill taxpayers however will not feel the pinch half the anticipated 60000 bill will come from development charges while the rest is com ing from money in under spent accounts from roads staff whitchurchstouffville public works director paul whithouse said the pond was a natural feature and was incor porated into me storrhwater plan for the subdivision it col lects silt from water headed into reesor creek area councillor harry bowes said when the subdivi sion was built there was a flaw in the design of the drainage system causing a serious silting problem at the michaluk property the porid is full of silt weed and algae its a mess mr bowes said a pleased mr michaluk said mr bowes has been very helpful we appreciate everything hes done and we welcome the towns decision to improve the situation one of the main worries was the link between standing water and west nile virus said ms ross the porid was becoming stagnant with the worries about west nile its a concern the pond does not have to be drained to befixed a suc tion hose will be used to vacu um the silt and sediment from the bottom the cleanup is expected to be completed this fall latcham show extended the latcham
