stouffville suntribune thursday june 26 2003 13 nhl teams pick pair of spirit players from page 1 and it was a little nerve- wracking it was a pleasure to be drafted so early sunday kevinsaid he scored 43 goals and 36 assists for 79 points in 46 games last season for the spirit we tested him a couple of weeks ago and he scored very well don boyd the jackets director of amateur scouting said he is an intense young kid who can skate and we think we have some time to see how he- develops kevin and his parents were told to expect to be picked in the third or fourth round but columbus was a sur prise he said of all the interviews new jersey went the best and i really thought theyd takeme a year ago he was just focused on his second sea son with the spirit and earn ing a scholarship but it just shows you that wherever youre playing the nhl teams will find you he said mike sullivan remained at- home in stouffville following the draft on tv and the internet kings general man ager dave taylor coach andy murray and a scout called to one day you see dave taylor on tv and the next day hes calling you mike sullivan la kings draft pick welcome him to the team one day you see dave taylor believe we can afford business as usual i believe its time for all concerned citizens to make a stand for the future they believe in and want to see lots of green space plenty of fresh water plenty of fresh organic foods plenty of clean air we need responsible government which is responsive to the peoples needs not corporate greed mans heeds for houses does not take precedence over his need for a healthy environment so i wish to widen the debate here and run for the position of mayor first i advocate a return to the 7o6pm council meeting the mayor and his councii have not encouraged the people to have a meaningful role in the towns governance and many citizens feel apathetical on a tragic note of hopelessness i apologize to the staff for the inconvenience but theres just too many good people being left out here and until it becomes a fulltime job with a fulltime salary i think we need as many interested people and the community involved as much as possible we need their expertise and their knowledge their wisdom and time and devotion when they can do that the present afternoon meet ings do not work it alienates the people so we will return to 700 you know im sure that i also feel very passionate about the town hall theatre and the restoration of it to its original func tion of bringing culture to our community it is part of our story and i dont think we should be forgetting our history for and be tempted by as yet untold riches to come a small community theatre is the proper role for this building it will serve to tell stoufmlles story to all interested people who come to our town to check out its many attractions our sports bur culture our heritage our historical town hall theatre our historical old lawn bowling club etc the restoration of our historical buildings and the preservation of our smallfarm community character are mandated in our secondary plan our sec plan does not give free reign to the developers it was designed to control growth in a manner which preserves our small town character whjle allowing new citizens to be assimilated into the town at a pace which preserves our identity slow monitored growth this expansion is not being done in a manner which is respectful of the people of stouffville nor do i feel the town has a mandate to conduct such an expansion we will review the subdivision proposals as to the realty with which they achieve the vision and the principles of the secondary plan and in the light of the oak ridges moraine act the preservation maintenance and enhancement of our greenspace are the cornerstones of these two documents ours will be an environmentally sensitive town we shall stress alternate means of transportation walking wheeling running a soft running track and exercise stations small parkettes bicycle paths as midblock breaks to facilitate community com munication in a small town manner personal rather than impersonal the cleanup of our conservation area ponds restricted use of chemicals a more active recycling program moderate excessive lighting activities for the stormwater management ponds community garden dog off leash areas the possibility of crosswalks downtown the beautification of the central creek corridor by hiding the rock cages with floral designs and small bushes along sidea boardwalk and benches and an overlooking gazebo more sculptures for pur sculpture walk with emphasis on small regular art and community displays in the centre of town between the park and main to correspond with the peak season of the heritage train with tours historical plaques and costumed student guides to entertain and inform passengers of our story and entertain them at our theatre lets give our visitors a reason to spend time and money in our historical downtown no one is really interested in urban sprawl we will see a brightening of stouffville not only in the floral arrangements but also in attitude of the people did you know the towns first printing press originally belonged to william lyon mackenzie and was rescued from the lake where it had been thrown after the 1837 rebellion ps im a townie as you all know as such i have an extremely limited outlook which is why i invite you country creatures to properly inform me of the issues that are concerning you that goes for you townies as well so if you please take the time and write a line or 2 to bring me up to speed on what you need to be a happy camper in this country community of ours thanks and in joy randy mole box 1539 stouffville on l4a 8a4 randymolesympaticoca 6406560 wwwstouffvilleorg all and any
