management gordpaolucci letters to the editor many helped parkview seniors the sars emergency has taught us all several lessons not the least of which is the vulnerability of the human species and our need to be more vigilant regarding infection control we have also seen how a community can come together in a time of need at parkview home we extend thanks to our residents who bore the loneliness of lim ited visits from families and friends who readily adopted the sars screening proce dures and who even before the first wave of sars protected fellow residents by having flu shots arid sanitizing their hands on entering and leaving we also thank our neighbours who toler ated almost 24hour onstreet parking because all entrances to the home were closed but one lastly but most importantly we express respect and appreciation to the parkview staff and indeed all the workers in all the healthcare sectors who live and work in the stouffville area thank you very much for your patience thieves take flower baskets i received a call early last friday morning from my dismayed mother who lives on rupert avenue in stouffville it seems she went out front to water her flowers only to find her two large hanging baskets overflowing wim impatiens were gone mom had the flowers less than a week they were gifts from her grandchildren for mothers day during that week mom had received many compliments regarding heir flowers obviously someone admired them a little too much it is very upsetting someone should feel he can take something from someone elses property mom says she hopes whoever received these flowers needed them more than she so if you were the recipient of two white baskets of mauve impatiens in the last week we hope you enjoy them and can live with the fact they were taken from somone else ssmith stouffville leave offleash area at milne park re leashfree area to be moved from milne park may 22 i was shocked and appalled to read markham council is planning to close the milne park offleash dog area councillor george mckelvey received a great deal of credit for initiating this long overdue project last year now he wants credit for closing it a year later we havent seen such political acrobat- ics since the days of jim jones i have attended several public meetings to discuss the proposed closure at every meeting those in attendance overwhehiiingly supported not only keeping it open but expanding it parkwide at specifically posted times as done in other jurisdictions mr mckelveys arguments in favour of closure can easily be resolved the street parking issue has already been resolved by the town riot locking the main gates during the day the environmental degradation of the current very small offleash area can be eas ily resolved by opening up the entire park to offleash at restricted and posted times onleash dogs have frequented milne park year round ever since it opened why should a smaller number of trained offleash dogs cause ariy more environmen tal damage than untrained onleash dogs ln either event any environmental dam age caused by dogs would be significaritly less than that caused by the hundreds of daily picnickers most of whom are not even markham residents mr mckelveys suggestion that an off- leash park at rodick road and miller avenue in a double hydro corridor on a rejected industrial site along hwy 407 for 10000 of taxpayer money is totally unac- ceptable there are 3000 licensed dog owners in markham so there should be a minimum of three offleash areas not one licensed dog owners are the largest recreational group in markham without any designated facilities as such we clearly need to organize in this- a municipal elec tion year how about a marching delegation of off- leash dogs at the umonviue village festival parade on saturday june 7 or even better a 3000 dog dog in during a council meeting if anyone would like to help me overturn this ridiculous proposal to close milne park to offleash dogs
