in 2004 the successor to prime minister jeh chretien will call a federal general elec tion with a fractured opposition and lack of cohesion on the right the repercussions may be incalculable the two rightofcentre parties represent very authentic elements to the conservative electorate in canada the progressive conservatives with their red tory or progres- sive tradition in eastern canada and the canadian aluance vyith its populous base in western canada since the 1993 election we have wit nessed two parties poised and situated in similar and sometimes identical positions on the political landscape this reality auto matically guarantees successive liberal majority governments the right wing split has created and forti fied the notion and practice of a federal sin gleparty state in turn the liberal party remains unchallenged ruling this country with arrogance decadence and laden with scandal and deceit the argument for having disunity on the right cannot be justified the alliance fears having to water down or dilute its principals whereas the pcs anticipate a hostile takeover as poignant as the debate may be the real- ity is both factions are somewhat debilitated politically while they remain divided the pc hierarchy has turned down co operation with the canadian alliance through a working relationship of possible merger with apprehension and trepidation it fears losing its identity historically the party has at many times been in a position of consolidation and amal gamation without rerunification on the right the federal liberals will be enshrined in power indefinitely had the ontario tories been so close minded and not embraced a strong unified coalition they would hot likely have been elected to government in 1995 and 1999 many renowned conservatives including hal jackman mike harris andvjphi3ein have supported a reaugnipeht ofthe right it is in the countrys best interest frdrri both a practical and philosophical position the canadian auianceahd piparjy must j resolve their cufferencesuiiif e imijabiisli- ing themselves as the cbnservatiye partypf canada and give voters a stark chsice such a broadbased open and account able smallc conservative party could win the west appeal to ontario and even coalesce some quebec nationalists as a party which would support the devolution of some pow ers through decentralization kirk support asian friends through tough times officials urge editorial april 10 this editorial is unfair to nonchinese canadians why is it when people teu the truth based on realistic facts we are labeled as racist or in your editorial as unfair for staying away from asian businesses the facts oh sars are clear sars originated in hong kong and china the public tends to stay away from the chinese community because of not knowing if members have just returned from an asian country it is also true the chinese community is not going to chinese businesses which can be seen by the decline of traffic at pacific mall chinatown in toronto and asian restaurants so it is not solely nonchinese canadians avoiding asian businesses it is mainly chinese canadians why dont you say in your editorial chinese canadians are unfair the comparison with the west nile virus situation in the united states when the edi torial states do we say americans are people we should stay away from is downright silly the west nile virus is not contagious and comes from mosquitos whereas sars is very contagious in addition anyone showing sars symptoms had to undergo a 10day quarantine if there is any chance of exposing yourself to that possibility why should anyone take the unnecessary risk frank vvetere j y unionville cedar grove cleanup traditional saturday the southeast markham com munity of cedar
