it was back in november 2001 when caroline then 15 and an aspiring equestrian rider suffered a riding injury 5 so serious doctors at markham stouffville hospital feared she would never ride again it was during a routine outing aboard romero an eight- yearold arab that the horse suddenly slipped and fell pinning her following firstaid administered by the barn manager the stouffville resident was rushed to hospital by her par- ents and admitted to emergency the xrays revealed 10 fractures of her left foot five dis located toes plus badly torn ligaments pins wires and screws were inserted in an effort to repair the damage in a recovery that still baffles physicians caroline was back in the saddle within six weeks she underwent her final operation in january orthopedic surgeon dr hemant shirali was marvel lous says gail tomson carolines mother and so was her physiotherapist florence tartavel although her injuries were serious her mother admits her daughter could have been killed but you cant keep a good girl down as the saying goes in 2001 as a junior at the canadian nationals in regina she placed fourth and shes headed for the same elitist competition in 2003 she already holds the northeastern united states championship and the reserve championship of eastern canada born in scarborough tomson and her parents moved to stouffville four years ago shes a student in grade 12 at trafalgar castle high school in whitby and plans on attending queens university in kingston this fall major ing in engineering she has an academic average of 93 per cent tomson began riding at the pickering horse centre near greenwood at age seven later she switched to arabians at a location in muskoka and has been riding this breed ever since in addition to romero she has a twoyearold called states and south america the nationals will be the last time she and romero will compete together its amazing how far hes taken me she says its time for him to come home and be a horse for awhile hes earned it she wants him retired to a hobby farm preferably in the stouffville area i could never sell him she says hes priceless she says the same of sassy however at two sassy requires more training time to gain showlevel experience and add to tomsons trophy case already bulging with rib bons and awards hurlburt plays taller than her height by adam malik special leslie hurlburt may stand only 5-foot- 1 but the 19yearold markham residents height can be misleading espe cially when it comes to hockey whenever hurlburt is on the ice she has a penchant for playing the game far taller than her height its that style of play which caught the attention of the university of connecticut womens hockey team which offered hurlburt a- full athletic scholarship which she eventually accepted captaining the markham district high school marauders girls team this past season the oac student carried addi- tional responsibilities as she was asked to produce some offence while hurlburt accept ed the role for mdhs which won the york region high school title and was fourth at the provincial playdowns she insiststhats not her usual game im not much of a scor er she acknowledged on my rep team the aurora panthers i play physical and go into the corners and try to be quick entertaining offers from three other universities hurlburts decision to attend connecticut was not difficult especially after she visited the campus i loved the environ ment she said everyone was friendly and i got along with the coaches really well they had been scouting me for two years and didnt tell me until september hurlburt credits her sucess to family and several role models my family has always been a big help she said and ive always liked steve yzerman forward with the detroit red wings cassie campbell and hayley wickenheiser national hockey team members upon completing her collegiate career hurlburt has no intentions of hang ing up the blades i want to make the olympic team even though it
