credit is leaving markham behind transferring 400 employees to a larger location in newmarket allied international credit corporation has signed a long term lease for a section of the former walmart at the savage road and yonge street plaza the companys 400 employees are expected to move july 18 leaving behind a much smaller location on allstate parkway in markham said david gallagher executive vicepresident its been very positive weve been planning this move to newmarket for the past 18 months mr gallagher said several businesses in the newmarket plaza have struggled since walmart relocated to newmarkets big box store corridor on yonge street north of davis drive about two years ago while a credit bureau will not bring in customers retailers in the plaza hope the companys 400 employees will shop locally the timing couldnt have been better for sala rabba owner of newmarket smoke shop he opened his convenience store a few months ago and recendy received a letter informing him of allied internationals move the plaza just died when walmart left he said but now hes hoping the summer opening of allied international will bring more customer traffic to his store locat ed a few steps from their new location tony sortinos molisana bakery has remained a popular lunch destination but the loss of walmart affected his business too after spending 15 years in markham the company had outgrown its 33000squarefoot location mr sortino said allied international and its hundreds of employees will be a welcome addition to the plaza we did feel a little bit of a hit when walmart left it will only get better now the company will take over 60000 of the 80000 squarefeet in former wal- mart building he said after spending 15 years in markham jhe company had outgrown its 33000- squarefoot location with a single floor layout ample square footage and plenty of parking for staff the former retail location was a perfect fit for allied international mr gallagher said it was better value for our dollar he said adding the company had also con sidered constructing a building prior to signing their lease in newmarket he expects most of the employees to follow the company to central york region adding there will be incentives for employees make the move without going into specifics mr gallagher said the companys incentive program resulted from the greater dis tance employees may have to travel with plans to hire more than 200 new employees over the next few years the additional space will allow the com pany to grow all of our recruiting will be done in york region its one of the big reasons for moving up there we feel there is a good base to draw on mr gallagher said region funds carpooling get out of your car and into someone elses the region wants to match you up in a car pool with someone in your area who goes to work in the same direction regional council has agreed to give 580000 to increase use of environ mentally friendly and trafficreducing modes of transportation the money will go to a greater toronto area program to set up ride matching van and car pooling and establish smaller associations across the gta with the same goals including associations in newmarket and aurora but the region will only give this money to the program if it is chosen by the federal government as a showcase program eligible to receive up to 10 million in december the gtawide pro gram was shortlisted advancing it to the second stage of the federal govern ments competition to find the best urban programs markham family ymca healthy com m unities capital
