lending his support to the soon- toopen community safety village at bruces mill in whitchurchstoufrville those reasons are his three children aged three to seven the honorary chairperson of the community safety village said his kids along with 30000 others each year will take advantage of the teachings at the facility children will learn first hand lifesaving pedestrian safety rules how to drive a car and how to escape from a burn ing house on monday the former toronto maple leaf captain officiated at the groundbreak ing ceremony for the 26-mil- lion village so far 16 million has been raised itll benefit my kids and yours itll benefit the entire community said mr clark a former resident of ballantrae who now lives in king the kids learn when theyre involved they wont even real ize theyre learning itll be a wonderful thing for all of the children it will help keep them safe mr clark was joined by global television news anchor beverly thomson in encourag ing communities across york region to support the safety vil lage the money is still coming in ms thomson said slated to open in september the community safety village will be lifelike and childsized complete with about 30 kid- sized buildings itll benefit my kids and yours itll benefit the entire community it will include roadways traf fic lights and street signs and will be reproduced to scale from architectural features found in ontario communities highlights in the village plans include a town hall rail way station school shops elec tric cars police station fire hall library post office hydro sub station and auditorium york regions business lead ers firefighters and members of local regional and provin cial governments joined vvhitchurchstouffville wayne emmerson and 200 others at the groundbreaking ceremony transportation minister and oak ridges mpp frank klees presented a 50000 cheque on behalf of the provincial government considering there are 83 mil lion drivers in ontario road safety will be a major part of the teaching at the safety vil lage mr klees said go transit gave 50000 to fund the construction of a minigo train station based on the heritage style of the real aurora go station vaughan firefighters and the city of vaughan donated 50000 while newmarket res ident joanne sweers also pre sented a 50000 cheque mrs sweers said she raised the money through the toronto and york region busi ness community an official of miller paving made a 50000 donation vanbots construction a markhambased company will build the village with the sup port of local subcontractors central york fire chief john sutton representing york regions eight fire depart ments pointed out most fire deaths and injuries happen before firefighters reach the victims the first line of defense is education and fire preven tion chief sutton stressed v briefly sun second in class in provincial awards the stouffville sun finished as runnerup in its class in the 2002 ontario community newspapers association
