among other things stories about our neighbours news both good and bad and advertising we read the paper each tuesday thursday and saturday to find out what is happening around town and to see what events or sales we might want to attend we imagine many of you do the same because the phrase it was in the economist pops up regularly in conversation the economist and the tribune bring us the variety of information we need to stay in touch with what is happening around us and the awards they have won speak to the quality they provide yes they are a for profit organization and are part of a much larger corporation but we wonder how many of you know how much the markham economist sun and stouffville tribune actually give back into the community for example the readers choice awards recognize our local merchants and the paper raises donations for charities through their own events such as celebration of the arts art in the park etc these are some of their visible activities we want to tell you about their behind the scenes contributions are you aware that they help our community by promoting the cause and activities of our local charities most charities do not have a budget that allows them to promote their cause and that is where our community newspaper can make a difference they help charities spread their messages and raise money for the benefit of us all without their help we at markham stouffville hospital and foundation would not be able to recognize and thank our donors community wide we would not be able to promote the events that benefit members of our community and that assist markham stouffville hospital in providing such excellent care these are just a few of the ways metrolands markham economist sun and the stouffville tribune give back to the community besides giving to us we know they assist many other local charities and we want to thank them on behalf of markham stouffville hospital foundation and markham stouffville hospitalthank you credited with writ ing a tale of two cities the markham district high school marauders and visiting newmarket high school raiders chronicled their own novel in thursdays york region athletic association senior football final as a tale of two halves for the marauders the first half was one which for the most part they would rather forget about as they found themselves in an unfamiliar position in trailing 107 after one quarter what would be a precursor of things to come in the second half took place late in the second quar ter when marauders quarterback chris geiser completed a 65yard touchdown pass to andrew nagy that enabled markham to hold a 1413 half- time lead from that point on the marauders controlled the second half and erupted for 27 unanswered secondhalf points en route to their third straight yraa title with a 4113 win and berth in next fridays golden horseshoe bowl quarterfinal at oshawas civic stadium against an opponent yet to be announced as of press time newmarket came out and played great in the first quarter our heads definitely werent in the game acknowledged marauders head coach mike feasby of his clubs lethargic start mr feasby a stouffville resident felt their rever sal of fortune began when their offensive line con trolled the line of scrimmage once we got it going especially when our offensive line dominated it allowed us to run the ball it was just a matter of time when the offensive line opened holes running back lordan harper had a field day as he amassed 236 yards on 21 carries and scored two majors mr harper was also selected the games most valuable player i thought the award would go to one of our defensivelinemen but it feels great to receive the award he said while satisfied with his own performance mr harper praised the work of his horses up front i ran a lot behind hollis lai and wayne brock and justin kimmel led the way with some good blocks mr geiser also scored two touchdowns while colin maclean had the games first major and boot ed four converts and a single off a missed 20yard field goal to round out the scoring if there was one facet of the game that con cerned the marauders it was the number of penal ties they incurred especially in the first half which saw a total of 21 flags thrown mr feasby concedes they will have to curb those miscues before next fridays game i think its due to our overaggressive play along with a bit of laziness on our part it definitely took two touchdowns away from us today one in the first half when it really mattered he cited stouffvill unionville spike
