university of memphis strength and conditioning coach by mike hayakawa staff writer heath weir says the toughest thing for him to do these days is his school work but when the former stouffville district secondary school teacher and head football coach isnt attending classes at the university of memphis en route to earning his masters degree in history hes working with some of the schools top athletes as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach weir is one of three graduate assistant strength and condition ing coaches currently working with the memphis tennessee schools football team classroom weightroom in his new capacity weir works with the offensive linemen in the weight room early in the morn ings before attending classes for two to three hours after that he returns later in the day for prac tices on game days weir assists the players with their stretching dur ing the pregame warm ups in strength and conditioning youre making the athletes bigger faster and stronger explained weir of his responsibilities im not calling the plays on the field or making decisions like i did at stouffville im not the head coach i have a boss to answer to its different he added in his role as a graduate assistant weir also has the responsibility of working with other varsity heath weir former sdss teacher hopes to continue his coaching career in the united states sports teams at the school apart from the football team weir is the head strength and conditioning coach for the schools baseball team and womens sprinters working with three different varsity teams weir estimates he logs anywhere from eight to 10 hours a day and six days a week its very time consuming he says but its a good go im not making money but i will have a mas ters degree while his responsibilities have met his expec tations weir is hoping all the fruits of hard labour will eventually lead him to a football coaching position in the us collegiate ranks being a graduate assistant is a position that can last for three years weir says however his agreement is for one year and at 30 years of age weir acknowledges hes not getting any younger expecting to earn his masters degree by the christmas break weir concedes hes approaching a crossroads in his career ill be applying for jobs in coaching he confirmed should weir reach a roadblock he says he would return to canada and attempt to get back into coaching at the high school level return to sdss ideally weir would like to return to stouffville dss but since he resigned prior to arriving at memphis he said he would have to reapply id be more than happy to come back to stouffville if the chance came up its a great lit tle town and a great place to run a football program said weir who remains close friends with some of
