and crop improvement association york region farmers from individuals to groups of two to community organizations like the community mennonite church of stouffville have collectively planted 200 acres we just keep gaining more interest as the years pass said dr oconnor a veterinarian who spent part of his life working in famine- stricken countries york mennonites recently played host to sangster nkhandwe manager of the foodgrains bank in the southern african nation of malawi he visited two mennonite soy bean projects totalling 100 acres one is on the ninth line and hwy 7 in east markham and the other is on stouffville road west of mccowan road malawi is one country that is hard hit by this years drought- induced famine mr nkhandwe said in malawi 32 million people face starvation the need for help from canada is at an all time high south africa is currently facing widespread drought about 13 million people in mr nkhwandwes homeland are in a lifethreatening situation mean while people in angola lesotho mozambique zambia and zim- ecuador honours local doctor markham doctor paul roberts has been given the unusual honour of being named a citizen of ecuador in recogni tion of his work sending relief supplies to that nation dr roberts who was given the citi zenship last month by ecuadors canadian ambassador chairs the friends of ecuador committee since ecuadors 1997 el nino weath er
