lisa queen staff writer rather than begging for more health care funding to bring york region in line with other ontario communities regional health experts should teach others how to do more with less oak ridges mpp frank klees suggests he was responding to a regional healthcare task forces draft report released wednesday which accuses queens park of shortchanging york res idents the report caps years of complaints from health care providers who have historically pointed out york receives less funding for health and social servic es than other areas of the province the report called fair is fair high lights areas where yorks funding is not keeping pace with other regions in the greater toronto area or around the province for example yorks per capita fund ing for hospitals is 60 per cent less than the provincial average and 63 per cent less than the gta average community mental health programs in york receive 62 per cent less funding compared to the provincial average and 63 per cent less compared to the gta average funding for longterm care facilities is 20 per cent lower in york than the k-c- ty l 2003 nissan sentra uncover the value or lease sentra xe with value option lower than the gta average the result according to the report is long waiting lists for residents needing care or patients forced to travel to other regions for services on a per capita basis york region residents receive fewer health care dol lars from the province of ontario than those living in other communities this gap continues to compromise access to quality care for current and future residents of york region the report states while mr klees agrees healthcare services in york need more funding especially as the population continues to explode he suggested the task force should not focus on forcing govern ments to level the funding playing field i dont think this is an exercise nec essarily of getting our funding up to the level of the rest of the province i think if in fact our hospitals are more efficient and are delivering service for fewer dollars per person i think they should be applauded for that he said and we shouldnt as a government encourage them to become more inef ficient there is something fundamentally wrong if organizations whether its hos pitals or other agencies are simply pleading for dollars based on the fact they should be at the same level of fund ing as someone else mr klees suggested york health agencies should stand as examples of efficiency for other providers around ontario perhaps what we should be doing is focusing more on other areas and ask ing why they arent as efficient as york region hospitals for example therein lies some of our challenge he said im not saying we dont need more money i know there is pressure there are growth pressures on services certainly as an mpp for oak ridges and york region ive certainly done my part to advocate for additional financial sup port where it is required but the report stressed york isnt able to meet provincial standards for care in many areas for example the provinces health services restructuring commission calls for 21 adult acute mental health beds for every 100000 residents york has 11 the commissions benchmark for adult rehabilitation beds is 25 for every 100000 residents york has 10 meanwhile the region identifies a shortage of almost 1000 longterm care beds just to meet
