evenings meeting of markham council a vote of 12 to 1 approved the box grove secondary plan this completes four years and four months of the public planning process that included countless meetings involving town staff consultants land owners council members special interest groups and the residents of box grove who together with main street markham is the group most directly affected by the plan i believe this plan sets high standards for future planning in the town it provides among other improvements municipal water and a road realignment that will return box grove to the safe residential community it once was it also makes possible the markham by pass which will relieve traffic on main street markham the lone dissenting vote was councillor erin shapero she chose to think of the people of box grove as pawns being used by the developers to push through urban sprawl the opposite is in fact the truth the res idents of box grove have negotiated hard to get much needed improvements from the developers councillors and town staff helped with the negotiations and the devel opers cooperated this is in contrast to the years of intru sions into box grove by various projects that left us with very little in exchange for the negative impact to our community councillor shapero chose not to make herself aware of the process or the issues but rather took the position that all developers are bad and all citizens are victims this is not true in box grove we are winners tom farrar chairperson box grove community association firing publisher for expressing opinion abhorrent in free society it was with considerable dismay i read about the firing of russell mills as publisher of the ottawa citizen to think a wellrespected publisher could be fired for doing what he is sup posed to do express his opinions openly and without fear of repercussions is abhorrent in a free society letters policy stouffville tribune welcomes your letters all submissions must be less referee irresponsible to keep game going with lightning near earlier this week i drove between my two girls soccer games which were happening concurrently one game at markham district high school was stopped at about 750 pm due to lightning the girls were immediately sent to parents cars to await the decision to end the game it was shortly after 8 pm by the time i arrived at my oldest daughters game at markville secondary school by this time the lightning in the clouds beyond the field was very frequent almost constant i pulled into the parking lot and couldnt believe my eyes the teams were still playing i was informed the referee had already been challenged about the lightning but he was unwilling to end the game because the lightning was not close enough to the field i was outraged and pleaded to the referee from the sidelines but he didnt hear or he chose to ignore me my mind flashed back to my days as a soccer convenor i was told the game will continue in rain hail sleet snow and fog however we never ever play in lightning then i thought about the professional golfers association and its rules golfers with millions of prize dollars at stake are not allowed to complete so much as a twoinch putt if there is even a hint of lightning with this in mind i looked out at the two teenage girls playing goal at each end of the field there they stood under football goal posts sticking straight up like forks into the electricitycharged sky how could this referee be so confident in his ability to judge how close is too close for lightning and where it would and would not strike i pulled my daughter off the field as peo ple watched puzzled how dare he gamble with our kids lives is it going to take a tragedy before common sense is used e brown markham mayor councillor help salt region weaning itself off june 22 brian harrison and his colleagues at york regions roads transportation department are to be congratulated for their initiatives to reduce the amount of salt applied to roads next winter whether salt brine sticks are the answer or sand instead of conventional rock salt the environment will be better off if less salt ends up in our precious groundwater in addition drivers in york region can help by lowering expectations of driving fast in winter weather if we condition ourselves to allow more time to get around in ice and snow and drive more slowly there ought to be fewer accidents this should reduce the need for the region to apply salt of any type on the roads bruce rhodes richmond hill decision on stouffville town hall about money not
