be picked again next year by mike hayakawa staff writer for jesse boucher going to the air canada centre last sunday for the national hockey leagues annual entry draft and not hearing his name called out was a little disheartening after all the 19yearold markham resident who toiled this past season with the markham waxers junior a club was a projected fifthround pick among north american skaters ranked by the nhls central scouting bureau despite being rated as high as he was boucher was fully aware his name might not be among those chosen by any nhl team in attempting to put a posi tive spin on the situation boucher said just because he wasnt selected the world nor his hockey career wont come to an end boucher was quick to point out he still has another year of eligibility for the nhls annual amateur lottery and with an added year of maturity when he enrols this fall at miami university in oxford ohio it just might bolster his ratings not being drafted with a lit tle disappointing said boucher a right winger who compiled 51 goals and 40 assists last season with the waxers and was one oftwo players from the provincial junior a hockey league who were projected to be taken in this years draft but i still have another chance next year to get drafted and im hop ing to do well next year to get drafted in attending the draft boucher revealed it was an eye opener for him and an event he wont soon forget it was a little intimidating he said in reference to seeing the plethora of potential talent in attendance at the draft and jesse boucher said the nhl draft was an eyeopening experi ence for collegebound player fellow onice comrades that he knew first hand but it was a good experience i now know what to expect next year hopefully next year will come out better while boucher expressed mild disappointment in last weekends proceedings waxers head coach russ herrington felt nhl teams missed the boat in not taking boucher based on some of the other guys that i saw who got drafted i have no disrespect for patrick murphy the other provincial junior a player from the newmarket hurricanes who was ranked and was taken by the edmonton oilers in the sev enth round and 211th overall but if he can get drafted so could jesse theres some parts of jesses game that are better than patricks and to score 50 goals in any league is an accomplish ment in speculating why boucher wasnt chosen herrington felt that in past discussions that he had with some scouts concerns were raised with his strength and skating jesses skating is deceptive herrington pointed out i dont remember him being caught out of position too often when he was on the ice and hes phys ically late in maturing maybe in one to two years time hell be a good solid 185 to 190 or even 200 pounds herrington also cited that his clubs short stint in the playoffs which saw them eliminated by the st michaels buzzers in the second round in early march didnt enhance bouchers draft status sometimes guys fall out of your memory in early march if we had gone on further in the playoffs maybe something good might have happened he said even if boucher isnt drafted next year herrington believes he could still end up in the dri vers seat in terms of being able to negotiate with all of the nhl clubs in the long run not being drafted could be a good moti vating tool for jesse just as surprising to herrington during last week ends draft proceedings was the decision by the nhl teams not to draft paul giallonardo entering last weekends draft the 18yearold unionville resi dent who was a defenceman with the windsor spitfires of the ontario hockey league this past season was projected as a thirdround pick among north american skaters i fully expected that he would be drafted said herrington while one may never know the reason why giallonardo wasnt drafted herrington said several factors could have come into play among those was his age and position as giallonardo still has one more year of draft eligi bility and playing on the blue- line herrington felt that nhl teams might elect to be more careful in assessing prospects in that position especially after the fact that he incurred a mid- season injury in which he dislo cated a knee cap and had a slightly torn mcl as well with giallonardo being a north american prospect herrington said scouts will have easier access on watching his progress on a regu lar basis as compared with european counterparts herrington hopes that giallonardo and boucher will take the adverse news and con vert it into a positive next year for kids not to be drafted will either crush them or moti vate them he said dont pay that traffic ticket l experts traffic ticket experts is staffed by expolice officers who will act as your agent in court defending
