community needs balanced with a realistic assessment of the kinds of services a community hospital of our size should be offering to its community markham i stouffville hospital sees its role and mandate as being a community hospital providing a full range of primary and secondary hospitalbased care as the community grows the hospitals range of services and specialties will by necessity change to respond to the population growth aging ahddiversjty the communities surrounding us are among the fastest growing neighbourhoods in canada it is estimated that the towns of markham and whitchurch stouffville will reach approximately 310000 by the year2016 a 40 growth from the year 2000 as the population increases we are seeing important changes in the demographic makeup of the community recent projections indicate that the 65 and over population will increase at a rate of over 5 per cent per year forthe next fiveyears and the number ofpeople aged 75 and over is even higher 6 per annum this change in the age structure will increase pressure on the hospital and other community health care providers in april 1998 the health services restructuring commission hsrc released its directives to markham stouffville hospital the commission was established by the provincial government to make decisions around the restructuring of ontarios hospitals their recommendations includedan increase in total beds from 200 in 1997 to 231 beds in 2003 they also called for an expansion in ambulatory care emergency and diagnostic services the hsrc however called for a decrease in acute care beds as the hospital began to undertake more detailed planning of how to implement the directives rt became obvious that something was wrong a growing and aging community needsmore not less health cafe and hospital services as a result we undertook- a detailed assessment of our current v future needs and opened negotiations with the ministry of health and longterm care aboutthe gapthavexisted v vv
