the new liberal skydiver in markham reads like an oxy moronthe one i was sent states markham is astrongarid vibrant community that is creat ing new jobs and opportunities it goes on to- say that i want to bring a fresh point of view to ottawa one that will help the people of markham we in markham appear to have done very well without a voice in ottawa because of the good ontario economy- created by the mulroney free tradethe harris conservatives i andof course the mayor and councilors of the town of mjrkham and york region weremember all toowell the last liberal voice we elected so lets tell the parachutist to go and drop off of the royal bank tower to try outhisnewtoy jshaw markham absolutely astounding that teachers contemplating a strike what is it with teachers it is- absolutely astounding that teachers are contemplating yet another strike are they not aware that par ents including those of us without children in schools have had enough how can we nonteachers sympathize with their cause forthe past decade most of the general population have suffered corporate downsiz ing lost jobs and had little or no pay increases those of us lucky enough to retain our jobs have seen our workload increase substantially to make up for the responsibilities of- those whowere laid off as a result this discussion about stress and preptimeisrrionotbnous and hasalltheappearanceofawhine i once asked one of my- clients a former high school teacher who isjoday a successful business man how teachers would fare in the private business section he repiiedvwthout hesitation that at least 90 per cent would not survive he went on to say how teachers as a whole simply have no clue what the rest of us endure to make a living this is a sobering thought that being said i must ask where are the rights of our children do they not have the right to a full education it is our childrens development that suffers every time a strike occurs perhaps it is time to consider teaching an essential service so as to protect our children sadly teaching as an honourable profes sions no more teaching is not fabricating widgets in a factory teaching involves our countrys most pre cious commodity pur childrens minds teaching is therefore more than just a job when a person decides to make teaching their lifes work they should behonourbound to fulfill that responsibility eachers must find another way to fight 1 their rause they have i to understand using our children formeirown personal gainis selfish and downright reprehensible- ifthe proposed contractis truly such a ter rible deal the government is offering then- teachers should get out of teaching go to another province or pursue another career do anything but interfere in our childrens educa tion if the time comes when good quality teachers leave the profession then we parents will not hesitate tqiobby the government to re package their deal to make it attractive enough to come back j right now- 1 dont see too many leaving since it is still by far the best deal in town d joyce richmond hill letters policy v v- i stouflvilletribune welcomes your letters all submissions must be
