attributed to me in the oct19 edition of the economist rsuntribune as cochairperson of the school council at stouffville district secondary school j stated to town council my dream is for consistent month by month year afteryear service by the school system list year stouffville enjoyed record levels of extremely good exrra-curricu- lav activities and their absence leaves high expectations followed by a void lor the youth in towncschool council is nonpolitical and clearly doefnot recommend thetown thestu- dents horjlhe parents to interfere in the bar gaining process however we believe it is important that alternate recreational activities be available jon a monthtomonth interim basis r thereis anger and disappointment in our ybumand mis interim option will provided good alternative to those who look to extra co- jjumcdar activities as part- of their regular school day once again our youth find tliemselves without the full services we have become accustomed to as one toronto ifying to see the sweltof public concern for the downtown without thecpncern and support oftlie community it wulbe very difficult to undertake the stepsnecessary to improve tiw downtown j however i would like to correct the impres sion that no one knows or cares these asser- tions make light of the greatdeal of time effort and money that has been expended over the past years on the downtown j thefirst majorstep was taken three years ago when the- mayors j downtown revitalization committee was formed this cbmmitteerin cooperation with the bia was very successful in cleaning up arid beautifying the downtown although this was only the first step it was averyirnpbrtantstep androne that has improvedline communitys attitude towards the downtown after that the bia struck a planning com- mittee undertook a fnarketirig survey and as a result formed the main street vision cornmittee this committee met studied pre pared and submitted a report to the biaon the vision of the downtown mer this report had been considered and reviewed the bia requested council to strike a separate main street vision committee which the council undertook this cbmmitteeis considering specific design v parameters for buildings and streetscape bn main street as well as consider- ing issues of tourism bylaw enforcement and- signs the general membership of the bia approved expansion of the bia to include existing businesses in the downtown area that are excluded by the bia boundaries and has a committee undertaking this project in addition the bia planning committee is now planning ways and means to attract busi nesses intothe downtown area as well as the developing of an overall plan to improve the viability of the downtown area- it is the intention to have these reports completed in the newyear and to submit them to council for review by council the public and thebia this will hopefully generate discussion support and enthusiasm to enable the difficult steps to be undertaken to improve the down town mariy of us believe that an attractive active 1 and vibrant downtown is extremely important for this community it will however take the widespread support of the community to make it happen so please tell the people presently running for office that you support an improved down town and encourage them to take the steps that will be necessary with the general sup port of the community it can happen eric button chairperson bia stouffville 1 1 join our online discussion groups visityrngcomandyoucanjoindiscussions about election issues growth and develop ment the student teachers were important people who commanded a great deal of respectfrom students par ents and the community after all teachers were the people who helped children learn what a cloud is made of what deers eat in the winter and the differencebetween oceans and lakes as a child i thought of teachers as rich not because they wore faricy clothes or drove fancy cars which of- course they didnt but because they were srhart and mysterious and idollike in my young eyes- 1 wanted to impress rriy teachers and i wanted them to impress me s as a parent i respect teachers in dif- ferentways first and foremost anyonewhocan handle 25 30 or 35 nineyearolds 7or five solid hours a day without running screaming fromjhe room is worth his weight in gold teachers deserve more money theres no doubt about it they havent had a pay hike in eight years while school administrators havel enjoyed plum raises over the same period- were talking about- the men and women who spend their days molding young minds caring for our children and helping to build fragile selfesteems were talking about the men and women who are teaching our children the voters leaders and parents of the future what more important job is there t r i say give them 2 per cent a year for the eight years they received nothing wrap trie offer into a threeyear contract and be done with it that would give teachers- a16-per- cent raise over three years that will keep them happy and happy teachers make happy students perhaps the educrats could give up a few raises irithe meantime distribution 9052948244
