parents and students to do everything possible to provide stability in our education system the public high school teachers in york region have honoured that commitment by putting aside a strongstrike mandate to do what is best for the students and that is to teach themeven though we are currently working without a contract we are working closely with the york region district school board to arrive at an agreement beneficial to everyone- students teachers and the board one ofthe main stumbljngblocksto our progress is the governments bill 74 bill 74 mandates that every teacher has an extra halfclass to teach thus enabling the government to downsize the education sector our- schools cannot afford to lose any more teachers with all teachers having additional students to teach test mark and report on there will be less time for each individual student h we want to continue to put our students first you can help guarantee a better education for your child let your school board trustees and mpps know that you support giving students more time with their teachers giving them more teachers as bill 74 has done is not the answer that is in the best interest of your child a message from the public secondary teachers of york region by kathleen griffin staff writer jonathan wambacks parents have filed a multi milliondollar civil suit against his accused attack ers we refuseto be victims jonathans dad joe wamback said yesterday as a family we refuse to continue being victimized the suit names the three youthscharged with aggravated assault in the vicious beating of and pamful road to recovery ever since wamback explained hissoirdoes not have a prognosis good or bad he has not able to return to high school this year if ever he heeds constant care and may require it for the rest of his life jonathan had great plans and wonderful goals to achieve in his life but he still has a considerable way to go the skull fracture is still a source of worry a fall or a hit in the head could be fatal for jonathan he has undergone surgery for severe ingrown toenails and kidney stones both a result of inac tivity and drugs he needed while in a coma he loved to golf and was good at it boasting a seven handicap skiing was another sport jonathan excelled at but his doctors have told him hell never ski again he wasan accomplished artist according to his teachers he wrote stories and essays at close to a professional level jonathan had great plans and wonderful goals to achieve in his life wamback said but he still hasa considerable way to go hes very fragile physically and emotionally you cant go through the type of assault he did be near death without experiencing difficulties it wasnt over when he woke upfromthe coma it wasnt over for his parents either you cant imagine what its like- wamback said joe wamback he has watched as his sons life changed following a tragic beating in a newmarket park the hours we sat at his bedside how emotionally devastating it is to see your childs life hanging by a thread a car accident or disease is bad enough but when this was deliberately inflicted ifs so terrible he said his wife lozanne has had to quit a suc cessful career as a personal trainer to stay home with her son 24 hours a day wambacks consulting business has suffered as well even his recent launch as a federal conservative candidate is taint ed with sorrow fourteen months ago even six months ago the thought of being a politician was the furthest thing from my mind but i recognized its the only way to make change bringing my passion to make it hap pen he said while he considers his family to be the luckiest in canada because jonathan survived when he finally understood how few rights victims have he felt compelled to work for change more than 900000 people have signed wambacks petition calling for changes to the young offenders act and with this civil suit wamback hopes to others will be encouraged to fight the system i urge people to explore their rights as citizens as victims we have more rights under civil law than we do under criminal law we must come forward and speak up something must be done someone has to start and this is as good a place as any three newmarket teens two 16 and one 17 have been charged with aggravated assault in the beating under the young offenders act they cant be named their trial
