dioxide during the peterson and rae years 5 it didnt suddenly appear in mississauga for mike harris benefit it will cost 800 million to convert it togas and this is why it was ignored by rae and peterson during the two previous administrations fines for environmental violators remained uncollected whichamounts to more than 10 million why didntpeterson and rae go after these violators harris has introduced legislation that will give the government greater ability to collect fines x the harris government also introduced the auto drive clean program- j t he should be applauded for that if the organ donor consent form accompany ing my drivers licence its silly because should i meet an untimely derhise i have no qualms about having- my organs going to help someone else to live ive told my husband that he who doescarry that signedform around in his wallet my pen has hovered qvertthe form each time my licence has been renewed but never made it to paper an irrational superstitious- emotional response from a compassionate and pretty much practical person and i just caritexplain it its certainly not because i dont want my organs going to ariother death stirs emotions within us that nothing else does in their grief many relatives are understandably incapable of making the decision to donate their loved ones organs even health care- givers are often reluctant to intrude uporia familys sorrow by pressing the issue of organdoriation- canadians are dying yet hundreds of canadians needing transplants die every year something had to be done and premier mike harris is doing it his government is proposing a pro- gram that aims to double the numberof fifesaving organs donated v the trillium gift of life network will require hospitals to provide notification fof every patient who is braindead hospitals must keep those patients on life support unless their relatives oppose donation until a network worker rrieets with the family to discuss giving the gift of life its a bold yet absolutely admirable plan a similar prograrn in the united states saw organ donations jump 63 per cent k essential to its success will be agency representatives who are able to do their jobs with incredible sensitivity undoubtedly there are those who will view- this prograrn at its worst as macabre organ harvesting and at its best offensively intrusive while a farni- lys wishes must ultimately be respected its essential that the question at least be asked most importantly we must continue to bring the cause of organ donation out of the closet so to speak to bring aware ness to the publicof the need for these vital organs as well if we have yet to do it we must address the issue in our own minds and even if we cant bring our- selves to do it in writing at least makeit clear to bur lovedories that we wish to give the gift of life i 1 i l f l i m h 1 11 1 i 1 1 i w if i
