for another intimate session of the book discussion group at the stouffville library banned books are the topic this week but there are no censors here discussion is free and participants have been known to wander off topic we go off on tangents its very relaxed said evelyn bennett who has been attending since she first moved to stouffville two years ago its a good introduction if youre new to town its very friendly and informal while book clubs have become trendy in the last couple of years this group has been meeting since catherine sword the librarys coordinator of adult services started it aboutlo years ago when swords schedule got too busy group member debbie lonergan was unoffi cially elected to keep it running there are currently xa regular members but the sessions are open to anyone weve had from three to 10 people at a session it depends on the weather said joan zeldin who attends with her husband ralph lome grove has been coming to the dis cussions since they began when i was working i didnt have time to read so the discussion group helped me to keep up by hearing about what others were reading the group selects at least five suggested titles on a common theme for each session grove says each member brings his own per spective to the discussion on a broad theme its generally about the principles and foun- photosjoerd witteveen debbie lonergan leader of the better people guttorn otto agrees ifyou want to cure the world you have to criticize to criticize is to reinvent christine wood says book discussion helps improve our moral character some of the best moments are spent with my husband and i sitting in the living room each with our own book and we stop from time to time to share something that makes an impression its very enriching on the topic of banned books there was no heated debate here governments do ban books but its often a very vocal minority special interest groups or religious groups who ban books lonergan suggests while some in the group believe censor ship is necessary in cases such as child pornography or times of war the group gen erally agreed banning books doesnt work often making a book more popular than ever the catcher in the rye by jd salinger for example is still popular at the stouffville library other banned books discussed were the adventures of tom sawyer where the sidewalk ends the stone angel lady chatterleys lover ulysses and who has seen the wind this evenings discussion started off with a reading from a book not on the list anything goes that interests people grove said clippings from papers movies some mem bers have a great stash of information grove said he has always been a reader and enjoys sharing with other people my wife and i began reading a collection of poems to our children when they were quite young and it never stopped its been a great contributing factor to communication with our children all the way through to their teens the group meets alternate thursdays at 7 pm at the whitchurchstouffville public library on main street the next meeting is march 30 to discuss media and mediums political will future topics are canadian literature history of philosophy the
