select clippers brought home the con solation tide from the recent pickering hockey tournament after defeating host pickering 21 paul geiger and dayle wilkinson each scored once for the clippers playing the tournament in a division with super 7 teams the clippers suffered losses to pickering 20 brampton 41 and markham 31 scoring for the clippers in those games were geiger and evan bruno in an exhibition game saturday the clippers got three goals from bruno and singles from geiger and tyler neil to defeat bradford 53 the last pizza crust had barely found its way into the garbage bin in the fall but the reality is that every year is a brand new one for provincial junior a hockey league clubs which must meet the annual challenge of trying to attract players coaches and manage ment types who are constantly on the lookout for better personal opportuni ties michel bond the fivefootfive fireplug from hearst ont who was the teams runaway scoring leader over the regular season was noncommittal when asked if hed be back im open for whatever i can get bruce stapley said bond i had a lot of fun and the people in stoufrville treated me very well spirit assistant captain and second- year veteran will chang is off to skate with the middlebury university hockey team in vermont next fall as many as five players could get drafted in this springs ontario hockey league draft although its likely a few of those will still end up with the spirit for another season spirit head coach brian perrin was nt about to confirm hed be back for a third season thats something ill have to think about he said thursday for spirit assistant coach ken burrows theres no time like the pre sent to begin looking ahead while not getting specific he said a team like the spirit must always be looking to better its overall position in a competitive league like the provincial loop as an organization we need some improvements said burrows i sug gest we start right now dont wait burrows said the team benefited this season from an aggressive scouting and recruiting program that began as soon as last season ended our goal at the start of this season was to set up for next year we were suc cessful at that ed hakonson who along with goodwoods zeev werek and richmond hills larry goldberg form the spirits ownership triumvirate hint ed of potential changes at the top dur ing thursdays game because of the ongoing expansion of his choko sports clothing business into markets worldwide hakonson finds himself with less time to give to the club he saved from potential early extinction a few months into its first season in 1995 while its hard to imagine the spirit without the plucky and ultimately committed hakonson at the top it may be that hell end up going the route of wallycrowder crowder who works at choko was installed as spirit general manager when hakonson took over the team in 1995 but eventually pulled out partly because of his choko workload but no matter what happens hakonson will always deserve credit for sticking it out through the dark days giving his time and money so that stouffville could have a junior a hockey team worthy of the overwhelming fan support it finally got during this years amazing playoff run
