of gays by patrick casey staff writer a grassroots group is taking its message of acceptance for gays and lesbians out of the closet and on to the roadsides of yorlcregion parents families and friends of lesbians and gays pflag put up its first billboard on warden avenue just north of 14th avenue yesterday posting a message that reads someone you know and love is gay a second sign its not a choice its ok to be gay will be installed on jan 31 on woodbine avenue north of john street there are a lot of people under the assumption that there are no gays living out in the suburbs they think they are all down in toronto at church and wellesley said marilyn byers a former thornhill resident who formed the york region chap ter of pflag in september 1996 in part because of her per sonal experiences with her son kevin the international nonprofit organization provides sup port and education to gay children as well as to their parents families and friends today byers spends most of her time speaking to school groups businesses and the community and says homophobia is still rampant throughout society if is not just the gay people who are affected it is their brothers sisters and mothers its a sad fact that onethird of all teenage suicides are related to sexual orientation byers said partially funded by the federal government each sign cost 3000 and will be up for four weeks the signs contain pflags website wwwgavcanadacompflagyork and atoll- free number for the aids committee of york region 1-800- 2437717 a volunteer organization that helped sponsor the initiative richmond hill
