14 economist suntribune community tuesday jan 25 2000 residents reject ninth line plan approval to widen road between markham and stouffville put on hold for two months by patrick casey staff writer with residents raising concerns over increased traffic and noise levels the reconstruction of ninth line between markham and whitchurchstouffville wont be approved for another two months after listening to a list of complaints from nine home owners york regions transportation committee shelved the project for 60 days to allow staff councillors and residents to study the impact of the project slated to begin next year plans call for a fourlane road with a continuous leftturn lane from hwy 407 to 16th avenue a fourlane road from 16th avenue to major mackenzie drive plus a twolane road from major mackenzie to main street in stouffville however several residents told the committee to halt the construction until after the markham bypass is completed and new traffic patterns can be studied it is impossible to sit in ones backyard and enjoy it alex jenkins told the committee last week in newmarket the process being followed does nothing to enhance the reputa tion of elected politicians its demoralizing to us that we have to fight those that are supposed to be working for us joan kivell and brett fair both said widening ninth line will bring additional traffic through residential subdivisions while sherwoodamber glen ratepayers association presi dent bob baird called the proposed blueprint a violation of their neighbourhood i moved to this area largely because it backed on to the ninth line with fields behind us we were looking for peace and tranquility said sir lancelot drive homeowner wayne parent i dont believe it is fiscally responsible to widen the ninth line until the bypass is completed this will only encourage people to use the ninth line instead of using the bypass it defeats the whole purpose of the bypass transportation commissioner kees schipper argued new residential subdivisions in the area will create added traffic while the acquisition of lands needs to be settled soon or the construction could be pushed back until 2002 the ninth line and the bypass- are both required to accommodate the traffic in the area argued schipper we know how much time is required for the project and we need this to happen between now and 2001 meanwhile project manager paul jankowski said noise barriers are only considered when the sound levels exceed five decibels and a study indicated the level of area noise will only rise two to four decibels nine years ago the only noise i heard on sunday morn ing was jim wicks cows mooing countered resident craig daniels i cannot relax in my back yard with the morning and afternoon rush hour markham councillor ralph aselin helped convince his colleagues to defer the project so issues such as design traf fic noise and streetscaping can be discussed further through the new working committee
