keepsake that shouldnt be trashed jan 2 it is both short sighted and frightening in my opinion and no i am not a teacher the conservative ontario government tax cuts were not given free of charge they were provided in exchange for a higher provincial debt along with reductions in education health care grants to municipalities infra structure development and ministry staffing and service this is a bad bargain to which not all of us agreed the commemorative book contained material relating best to junior public school grades not all grades the paper was so shiny that almost no writing instrument could be applied to this doityourself project it was a memento but it was tarnished before it was given two million dollars could have put a new computer in 1000 schools it could have restored music arid language programs it could have improved the teacherstudent ratio it could have reduced tuition these would have been true gifts to the students fortunately protests are still legal hence wetmores protest of the return of the books the regimes of dictators are not welcome here sadly the recent omnibus bill 25 reaffirms the right of the ontario government to change laws without bringing the question before the legislature so maybe we are living under the war measures act i am not happy to have democracy slip away the ontario tories are a special interest group like the groups they try to disparage but with less humanity we have another three and a half years of them but we dont have to swallow their myths and confections greg herring unionville stouffville came together in celebration of life and faith on jan 2 a beautiful and exciting occasion was held in stoufrville it seemed like 1000 opinion mm fern loure a goodman charles m schulz imp fillip 1 isiiil 111 111 1 hard to create such a successful cel ebration and to suggest it become an annual affair a thank you to norm clements of the stouffville market for your hospitality dianeward newmarket mark the new year by uniting in doing nothing to hurt the planet when will the world unite let us start now this century we lived through- two world wars and countless others the united nations was formed to unite the world but this has failed we say we are environmentalists yet we pollute our air and water we say we are god fearing people yet we rob beat and murder we say we love animals yet we destroy their environment we go to the moon and mars yet we do not know or understand our own planet our plan et is ailing badly and we keep trying hard to make it sicker by damaging the environment further we build giant oil tankers so we can pollute the oceans much fasten we build bigger bombs and weapons so we can kill all the people the newnullennium is upon us let us stop everything we do we stop on nov 11 and remember all the dead from all the wars so lets do nothing for a day i started jan 1 imagine how many people would be saved by not driving by not killing by not polluting let us all start every new years day all day and do nothing god help this planet happy new year steve pliakes newmarket giftwrapping proceeds boost childrens aid society programs the spirit of giving is alive and well daggett separate smoking areas fairest answer to health concerns in my notsoesteemed opinion prohibition proved one thing only the more people were told not to clrink the thirstier they became and if a clandestine committee in york region has its way and bans smok ing in public places you can be assured smokers will light up that much more its not hard to figure out that ban ning smoking in public places is not the answer to protect nonsmokers from the hazards of secondhand smoke in the last week reports have shown how ineffective some anti smoking bylaws have been in vancouver theyre still lighting up and bartenders are wearing gas masks to protect their lungs and paper suits to protect their clothing in vaughan where one of north americas toughest antismoking bylaws was established four years ago very little enforcement has occurred some businesses are not even aware of the bylaw while others have been forced to police their own patrons personally i hate cigarettes and it irks me to no end when i hear a smoker say i have my rights news flash smoking is a privilege where oh where in the charter of rights does it say you have the right to smoke and pollute other peoples breathing space smoking is not the only indulgence that affects other people alcohol too affects others just ask family members of an alco holic ask a victim of a drunk driver indulging in either drinking or smok ing simply comes down to a matter of being responsible for example if you drink you should know enough not to get behind the wheel of a car have a drink but dont let a drink have you or anyone else if you smoke keep in mind the impact your indulgence has on those around you family friends cowork ers and even complete strangers like drinking smoking is not going to go away and those who wish to enjoy the privilege regardless of antismoking committees or task forces must act responsibly since there are designated places for people to drink maybe the simplest answer is to designate places for smok ers to light up and a move in that direc tion has begun toronto city council recently approved a bylaw similar to vaughans giving pubs and restaurants until july 2001 to create separate ventilated smoking areas that take up no more than 25 per cent of total seating perhaps that is the most fair and equitable solution for all businesses smokers and nonsmokers alike
