he said but we should have a good say in the type of candidate they should be looking for black said five members of the sevenmember board interviewed can didates last time which may make the task somewhat easier but the board appeared to have a clearcut winner in fantino who had become the darling of most police forces searching for a new chief and many of the candidates short listed last time may not be interested in the 140000 job more than a year later opp chief supt wayne frechette is one top candidate who was rumoured to be in the running last time but an opp spokesperson speaking on frechettes behalf told the era- banner yesterday hes no longer inter ested in corning to york region hes not in the running the spokesperson said he wont be apply- ing a surprise candidate could be former york regional police union president paul bailey former cop union president says hes beeen encour aged to apply for chiefs job paul bailey bailey who is now an administrator with the ontario police association said he is seriously considering applying for the job the outspoken bailey helped spear head a provincial audit of the force that led to criminal charges being laid against former chief bryan cousineau i have been encouraged by several people to apply bailey said one thing is for sure youll always know where i stand on issues bailey also lobbied heavily for fantinostyle leadership when the board was searching for a new chief the last time at the time we needed that auto cratic style of leadership to clean things up he said but now they need a heal er other possible candidates include deputy chief armand labarge and deputy chief terry kelly labarge 46 has only been a deputy for one year but has more than 25 years of experience on the york region force several frontline officers told the erabanner they favour labarge because he knows the force well there arent too many as good or as hard working as he is a 26year veteran of the force said ive got a lot of respect for him and i dont think hell be leaving anytime soon but one police board member said labarge may need more time as deputy before hes considered for the top job hes a great guy the board member said i just dont think hes ready yet kelly who came to york region from toronto in september isnt favoured by many frontline officers simply because he isnt well known yet i dont think it would be right to replace fantino with another outsider one officer said we need more time to see what kelly is all about also on the list of possible candidates are toronto deputy chiefs steve reesor and mike boyd and supt bill blair all three were interviewed for the toronto job but lost to fantino i dont think there will be a shortage of candidates said police board vice- chairperson david barrow
