new book a wampum denied subtitled procters war of 1812 is a fascinating account of events which took place during that war this is the definitive story of the war of 1812 on the detroit frontier the author explained it strips bare the biases and prejudices of previous writings and illuminates events as based on original sources the book deals with the nevertold truth of the british agreement to have no peace without recognition of a native state in the old northwest the ultimate breaking of that agreement is reflect ed in the books title a wampum was a bead belt or piece of jewellery which was used as currency among native peoples pmcters war of 1812 is the answer to the only other book to deal with this issue richardsons war of 1812 said antal noting that john richardson was a 15yearold volunteer and ensign who was strongly prejudiced against henry procter commander of the british forces antals book casts new light on the conflict by re assessing procters career and by focusing on the canadian british and native points of view he describes the work as scholarly in research but read able in style its the culmination on and off of 20 years work dr larry nelson director of fort megis state memorial in ohio calls a wampum denied a tour de force its a mature piece of work wellground ed in primary sources and a significant contribution to the field this is the detroit frontier anastasia an enchanting tale for all ages screen scene sluurt green revolutionary russia is one of the last places youd expect to see as the backdrop for an animated fantasy film yet somehow despite the grisly history of the period tagteam pro ducersdirectors don bluth and gary goldman have crafted an exciting vivid moving and roman tic creation that is both highly entertaining and for the most part historically accurate the film which opens friday uses one of the most famous leg ends of russian folk lore that dur ing the bolshevik uprising of 1 9 1 7 anastasia the youngest daughter of czar nicholas ii escaped this version of the story has the histori cal figure rasputin selling his soul in exchange for supreme power but in order to fulfill his end of the deal he must kill all members of the romanov family he almost accomplishes this by inciting the proletariat to revolt thinking hed lived up to his end of the deal rasputin a reallife lech er and religious con man is mys teriously thrust into a decaying state of limbo from which he can only escape once he kills the young princess the girl voiced by meg ryan meanwhile has turned up in an orphanage as a peasant named anya suffering from amnesia and unable to recall her regal past with the help of a young oppor tunist named dimitri john cusack and a former aristocrat named vladimir kclscy gram- mer who arc planning to con the girls rich grandmother angela lansbury now living in paris she sets out to find her true identity and the only member of a family shes forgotten she has anastasia is a remarkable film on many levels its rich flowing ani mation which seemlessly fuses vladimir kclscy grammcr anya meg ryan and dimitri john cusack en route to paris to find the girls grandmother conventional techniques with com puter enhancements is a technolog ical marvel its vast array of char acters some historically accurate some not are all well defined and superbly acted especially hank azaria as rasputins batty sidekick bartok enhancing the overall product are the songs of stephen flaherty and lynn ahrens most importantly though its story as realized by bluth and goldman is as touching as it is timeless working from a script by a quartet of established writers usually a formula for disaster bluth and goldman demonstrate a fearlessness in presenting the fairly heavy material while making it understandable for its intended audience anastasia is a treasure trove of visual musical and narrative delights that will thrill moviegoers of all ages fullertons stage open to celebrity jam
