been seen around town performing at historical society and horticultural society functions as well as at the town crier stouffvilles food bank has just enough food for the long weekend but the shelves are almost bare we have sufficient food for the long weekend but our shelves are pretty bare said esther powell the director of stouffvilles food- bank it doesnt even have the bare necessities food which is always in stock we havent even got a tin of beans said powell we gave the last can out last night the food bank is in dire need of nonperishable food products dry pasta canned fruits and canned vegetables everything except kraft dinner we really need pasta not kraft dinner but the macaroni and spaghetti said powell people dont look at kraft dinner as some thing else other than kraft dinner but the other types of dry pasta you can do different things with it along with canned and dried pasta the food bank is always in need of canned meats and fish like familys ship rammed by bounty jordan h green staff reporter a stouffville familys sailing trip came to an abrupt halt this week after the famous tall ship the hms bounty collided with their homemade sailboat last sunday night the franzens who where just starting a weeklong cruise around lake ontario were on their sailboat anchored in port dalhousie in st catherines when the 240tonne hms boun ty came crashing into their 37- foot 1 1 metre boat they were turning in the channel and the captain miscal culated the distance said nancy bogartfranzen it was drag ging the boat over it was going to capsize but the ropes broke we were lucky the americanregistered tall ship which has been in toronto since june took out the franzen s 15metre mast push ing the sailboat with it real fear i was really afraid i thought they werent going to make it said bogartfranzen it could have been much worse bogartfranzen managed to get her 11 yearold son daniel and her husband gunter off the boat and onto the pier safely so there were no injuries luckily we all got off the boat said bogartfranzen lucky were were docked if this had happened out at sea oh boy the franzens went to watch the bounty to kick off their summer holidays it was the first day of our vacation said bogartfranzen we had to limp back we took the mast out its going to take two to three weeks to repair there is a lot of damage the damage to the franzen s boat was estimated by the boun tys captain robin wallbridge at anywhere from 7000 to 10000 wallbridge told the franzens the damage would be paid for by the bounty they actually talked to the tall ships foundation maybe we can have a vacation on the bounty said bogartfranzen which please see page 9 h ham and tuna demand for the food bank has increased slightly this summer since last summer last summer there were 75 households in august using the food bank said powell i dont have the totals for this august yet but id say its about 80 households thats a biggie because some households have five to six chil dren despite the demand donations have been down donations always slow in the summer as peo ple are on vacation the big easter food drive last year only managed to raise 500 pounds of food and thats a pittance according to powell food bank use fluctuates like a rollercoaster although this august use is up in july it was down to 75 households according to powell people are still struggling how ever its not always the same peo ple said powell some people use it for a short time others for a longer time the average time span for a household is about a year accord ing to powell not only can the food bank use more food volunteers to help dis tribute the food are always wel come were always in need of volun teers said powell they can call the food bank to get involved stouffville has been good to the food bank in the past we are grateful to the communi ty that our needs have been met said powell since 1991 weve had a food bank thats a long time for a community to be supportive and when we call for help the help is always there donations to the food bank can be dropped off in stouffville at the local ap iga weston foods and the care and share shop to find out
