house at hydro the ground is heaving under ontario hydro and indeed all ontario residents the revelations just keep on coming out and the heads are starting to roll first theres a july report saying hydro has quietly and illegally discharged tonnes of metal parti cles into lake ontario over 25 years then there is news that hydro kept quiet for 18 years about tritium leaking into groundwater from the pickering nuclear generating station this week theres the damning report on overall nuclear operations in the province stating our three stations only meet minimally acceptable standards and need new management procedures and better security the man who commissioned the report and has headed ontario hydro for two years allan kupcis resigned tuesday and more managers may yet lose their jobs as hydro closes down possibly onethird of its reactors and they should lose theicjobs there should be a thorough housecleaning of ontario hydro not just for managerial problems but for criminal wrongdoings as well those who concealed information about toxins leaking into our soil and water should go to court and face charges those who knew reactors were malfunctioning or needed repairs but did nothing should pay for their incompetence for compromising our envi ronment and our safety our mpps and mps should push for stiffer penalties to prevent future pollution of the province and the country and better more transparent reg ulations of the nuclear power industry youre ticking offthe 3ta mayors at the police union at to andtheteacher federation ft 1l them afjir w lunch xlhm meeting needed with mayor dear editor with regard to mike watsons letter aug 7 he is posi tively right the septics should be dyetested separately to see the ones that are defective the town had no plans when the septics were installed that there would be a possibility that the 45 gallon drum was used for more than just a septic for cottages on weekends and holidays i am sure the contamination of faulty septics is more of a health problem the drinking water in some wells is in very poor condition and these should be capped if peo ple are hooking up to town water and not using the wells as mike claims the wells in other cases are in good con dition and should be used to water gardens and wash cars and uses externally only i do not know if people in town pay a users fee on their water bill to include sewage as the city of toronto charges we at the lake have no sewage service and there is no mention of the cost of a litre of water passing through the meter mike watson knows what he is talk ing about and not getting much acknowledgement from others on this i also believe people around the lake with complaints on these water problems and other com plaints should have a meeting with mayor emmerson in the near future to have questions answered george and helen dodd stouffville green was way off the mark dear editor this letter just has to be written to give another point of view on air force one other than mr greens air force one is totally entertain ing as it is ah action film you sit on the edge of your seat for the two- hour ordeal ordeal my foot the plot is basic good guybad guy but its been many years since there has been a united statesrus sia conflict so its almost new you dont get time to guess what will happen before it does and there is even enough humor to give you a chance to laugh and breathe harri son ford meets and keeps his high standard of acting as in patriot games sure air force one is a patriotic movie but so what what does one expect when it concerns the presi dent of the united states come on mr green dont turn people off from going to this movie just to fill a page in the paper i saw it last sunday and will be taking friends again friday night a disappointed reader with a state ment that just has to be said joanne smith claremont children must learn rules of road dear editor last week on my way to work i was almost involved in a tragedy i was stopped at an intersection and as i started to pull out a little boy about eight years old came flying through the intersection on his bike because of a tall hedge blocking my view combined with the speed the child was trav elling i didnt even see him until i had pulled out i slammed on my brakes and he swerved out around me and i thank god i did nt hit him by the look on his letters to the editor face it scared him as much as it did me hopefully it scared him enough to stop at intersections from now on parents please make sure your children learn and practice the rules of the road for their own safety teenage and adult cyclists take heed too all the safety equipment available will afford them little protection in a colli sion with a car or truck and chil dren if you are old enough to ride a bike on the road you are old enough to ride it responsibly even when mom and dad arent watching if you dont some day the consequences could be dead- ly if i had hit that little boy it would have bothered me for the rest of my life but he may not have had the rest of his life it could have been your child think about it cathy paszat stouffville teens do good things in town dear editor as a parent and grandparent and a res ident of stouffville for 47 years i am in agreement with al yetman regarding some police treatment of our teens i had one daughter and two sons who were raised in stouffville and who attended public and high school in stouffville and who were never arrested by the police bill the youngest worked two jobs to put himself through university and is now a lawyer in toronto paul the oldest also worked to put himself through queens university and post graduate studies at mcmaster universi ty anne graduated from high school and is now working helping seniors in their homes in london doing the same work that chats does in stouffville and markham we had home rules and knew where our children were most of the time we never heard much about the good things teens do in and around our town we hear mostly about the teens who are in trouble with the police all teens do not do damage to property take drugs alcohol and smoke pot my children were not perfect and it is part of growing up to learn by their mistakes i am a senior now living in an apartment in parkview village in stouffville aiden boyd is not known to me but there are many friendly teens who do good deeds for seniors please give our teens a chance and do not have some of the police subject the teens to undeserved harassment jean middleton stouffville stouffville tribune patricia pappas publisher
