p14 the tribune thursday august 14 1997 the tribune arts entertainment st kiss me guido is consistently amusing screen scene stuart green as society in general finally begins to accept gays and lesbians as the regular people they are were probably going to see more films like kiss me guido from the stu dios already one of this years biggest hits the hysterical my best friends wedding gave a prominent nonexploita tive gay role to a gay actor of course gaythemed v films are nothing new whats significant about kiss me guido is that it is being released by a major player para- mount and that its inof- fensive its an encouraging trend that bucks years of hollywood reluctance to feature gay characters as anything other than flamboyant window dressing or crazed psy chos and while kiss me guido isnt a major accomplishment as art it succeeds at being enter taining in a way that will appeal to both gay and straight audiences nick scotti is frankie zito a toughtalking but sensitive pizza maker and struggling actor from the bronx who decides he needs to live in manhattan if hes going to make it in the entertainment business he moves in with another struggling actor named warren anthony barrile whose lifestyle is something of a shock to the ardently hetero sexual frankie but when frankie is offered a role in a gay play he begins to see life from the other side while warren is given a glimpse into frankies world one that features an odd array of charac ters as written and directed by tony vitale kiss me guido the title refers to the slang term for ital ianamericans is both funny and refreshingly understated in its por trayal of two stereotypi cal characters it would have been easy to make the leads into caricatures of every gay and italian screen persona weve ever seen but that never happens kiss me guido isa simple yet consistently amusing film artburst 97 is a great way for new artists to break in pucker up left to right david deblinger christopher lawford and anthony barrile star in the funny and touching story of the culture shock between two unlikely room mates in tony vitales new comedy kiss me guido artists from as far afield as ottawa and grimsby will swell the ranks of local artists exhibiting in the latcham gallery artburst 97 annual juried exhibition opening on fri day aug 29 and their works are as diverse as their addresses christopher jackson the gallerys direc torcurator claims this is a must see exhi bition the latcham gallerys juried show has a strong reputation and deservedly so in some years we have had up to 120 artists submit their work with that kind of particu lar theme or approach this year were look ing for the best work whether its abstract realist impressionist or whatever jackson explained that juried shows are an excellent way for artists especially young artists to get feedback about their work for someone who has only been out of school for a few years or youre just starting out its hard to get exposure commercial galleries arent ready to invest a lot in your career and public galleries havent heard about you either a juried show is a great way to introduce yourself to a large audi ence the gallery director also gets the benefit of seeking work by artists he might not know about or who might live outside the region i like to try and program a mix of work some by artists from the area because they are important to us but also some from out side our area so that local viewers and artists can benefit from seeing work by artists with whom they might not be famil iar in a several cases over the years an artist who originally showed in a latcham juried show has been included in later group shows or even a solo exhibition artists whose work isnt included in the exhibition will benefit by the critique sheet they receive its not a negative thing jackson explained its meant to give the artist an idea of what isnt working most artists will tell you that one of the hardest things to get is a knowledgeable honest response to their work this years jurors artist and teacher teo dragonieri and flavio belli director of the joseph d carrier gallery in north york will have their work cut out for them according to jackson theres a lot of good art to be judged everything from photogra phy to mixed media there are going to be some very hard decisions to make its margarita the town crier
