association is by no means confined to area residents take peter rothschild marketing execu tive of the romney hythe and dymchurch railway in kent england who signed up with the local organization several years ago although he lives across the pond roth schild is well acquainted with stouffville having been a regular visitor to the com munity for the past half century i met my wife helen burkholder when she was in the rcaf in england and i came over for the first time in 1947 to have a look around he told the tri bune during a recent visit he met his future wifes family and managed to induce her away which was one of the cleverest things i ever did the couple married in 1948 initially settling in london and later spent 10 years in germany i was working out there and i worked in belgium for three years rothschild retired in 1989 and began to devote more time to the romney hythe and dymchurch railway of which he has been a member for more than 15 years while he was here he put in some time at the ydhra ticket office and was great ly impressed with the organization he originally heard about the railway through his sisterinlaw mary baker and from copies of the tribune mailed to him and his wife ydhra past president rob pare also visited romney on a trip to england and took the train while he was there said rothschild we carry 150000 passengers a year and were probably the biggest attraction in our part of kent however he added no one ever got rich running a tourist train we keep our heads above water but as soon as you make a bit of money theres always something that you must spend it on like repairs or new track work but i would like to make the point that the yorkdurham railway will be good for trade and commercial interests in this town and i hope those interests both here and in uxbridge will support it as much as they can his own railway is a professional orga nization with 30 permanent employees and is known to railway enthusiasts around the world established in 1927 the picturesque route takes visitors from the port of hythe through dymchurch st marys bay and new romney to the lighthouses at dun- geness point the line between stouffville and uxbridge covers a lovely stretch of country linking two charming villages he noted youve got a marvellous station at uxbridge and it looks as though youll soon have a lovely one in stouf fville im sorry i wont be here when it opens he is particularly impressed with the uniforms worn by ydhra volunteers the public see those people in their smart uniforms and that shows them what a professional organization this is fine praise indeed from a man who is well versed in the history and opera tion of railways kilba i 8 alfjsiftls emusbbi mimismw0mxmsmi siishb2sss itfmf wtzj mpwmizmf i sljec in the 1980s producer jerry bruckheimer was behind some of the most inane and mind less and more disturbingly profitable films of the decade his name adorns such films as top gun flashdance days of thunder and beverly hills cop to name a few in the 1990s he continued making box office titans like the rock and crimson tide which while offering intense action had a lit tle more depth to them its for that reason that con air comes as such a disappointment nicolas cage stars as parolee cameron poe on his way home to see his family after serv ing time for manslaughter hes aboard a plane filled with convicts on its way from california to a new maximum security facili ty when things go terribly wrong led by a vicious criminal mastermind played by john malkovich the cons assume control of the aircraft and intend to use it to fly to freedom in a nonextradition country meanwhile the us marshal john cusack responsible for overseeing the trans port operation is trying to coordinate a res cue effort that wont require shooting down the plane all of this results in mass chaos both in the air and on the ground which perfectly set up the big fiery explosions fights shootouts and gratuitous bloodletting that are so com monplace in these kinds of movies unfortunately the expertly choreographed and photographed stunt sequences are about the only things con air has going for it on a technical level the script is full of gaping holes and with the exception of malkovich and steve busce- mi as two of the more interesting bad guys- the characters are cliches right out of an introduction to screenwriting text book theres also the matter of the incessantly pumping pseudorock score that permeates every scene a trait that was so annoying in top gun first time director simon west lets things get away early on if he ever had control in the first place given bruckheimers reputa tion as a very handson kind of producer con air is the kind of big dumb action movie that requires total suspension of disbe lief to make it enjoyable but even then it never quite gets off the ground buckle up nicolas cage centre gets set for the ride of his life when his plane is hijacked by a dastardly convicts in jerry bruckheimers new action picture con air
