p4the tribune thursday may 29 1997 thursday may 29 1997 vol 7 no 26 the tribune opinions st send your letters to the editor to the address below editorial voters have a big decision monday election day is monday and the voters of this riding have a tough choice ahead of them if any one item has dominated the campaign of 97 it would be its overwhelming dullness this has been one tough election to get excited about yon know youre in trouble when the biggest story so far has been the fainting of the mediator during the french debate having said that though this is the elec tion that takes canada into the next century voters would be wise to look at where the parties stand on job creation the economy national unity and the environment nationally the reform party believes it offers the alter native to the policies of the liberals and tories especial ly when it comes to national unity however whether or not qntarians are buying that message is hard to measure pollsters and major media say reforms opposition to dis tinct society is not playing well in the province but the party is convinced is has struck a chord with average cit izens fed up with the uncertaintly about quebec the liberals appear to be trying to sleepwalk through the election while the tories attempt to rise from the near dead monday should be interesting ife how theitve gone lack of traffic lights sickens reader dear editor i am frustrated two school boards and our town have decided its safe for more than 100 children to walk to the new public school and st marks in fall 1997 by simply mov ing north the existing ninth line crosswalk and crossing guard not all the children will be cross ing with the crossing guard week ends after school extracurricular activities children early or late or just playing oblivious to the time will be crossing alone my backyard is on ninth line speeding rush hour commuters and heavy industrial trucks do not obey posted speed limits have you tried crossing at the existing ninth line crosswalk in rush hour how many cars stopped in winter darkness with high snow banks and unplowed side walks the traffic will not see grade ones pointing their little fingers and letters going into speeding traffic its an accident waiting to happen theyre playing russian roulette with our childrens lives we must change the traffic pattern to get the traffic to stop where the children will be crossing with either traffic lights or stop signs following the schools directives i have personally spoken to the school parent president the mayor my school trustee transportation officer my board of education man ager of transportation and superin- tendent of finance they said get involved come to a meeting there will be lights in five years time no money speak to your school board i wont be here next year we did a traffic study regional road not our responsibility get the police to issue some traffic tickets a crossing guard will do its worked in other areas after that its the parents responsibility parents how many children will have to die before the town can pay for two stop sign posts or traffic lights there is going to be blood on ninth line and my problem is im going to know the child and see the parents agony surely im not the only parent concerned with child safety and see the need for traffic lights or stop signs on ninth line this letter does not even touch the fact that little johnny or suzie will be in the middle of the road dodging traffic and scampering between all the school buses and drop off parent vehicles because skinny little elm street does not plough its sidewalk and tiny glad park avenue does not even have sidewalks there will be no crossing guard to positive experience at sdss music concert dear editor last week i had the pleasant experi ence of attending the sdss spring music night 97 this was an evening where the students of the music depart ment were able to show their parents siblings grandparents and interested members of the community the progress that they have made over the last nine months its amazing what can be accomplished through music classes and early morning band practices mr doug walker and mr paul grassi have done a wonderful job and should be proud of themselves and their students early morning band practices for stu dents also means early morning band practices for teachers this is an extra curricular activity that mr walker and mr grassi have given to these students i want them to be aware that this is appreciated by the parents as well as the students the evening was full of positive elec tricity it was the official opening of the beautiful new music room a band member spoke of memories of their recent trip to chicago there was excit ed anticipation of their upcoming trip to ireland england and scotland and many students were presented with spe cial awards the highlight of the evening was a special presentation to the music department thanks to a let ter directed to the lions club from a concerned and interested parent the lions club with assistance from town council was able to provide sdss music department with a much needed electronic keyboard the music teach ers and students were not aware of this presentation ahead of time and were overwhelmed with the generosity the lions club is soon to celebrate their 60th anniversary that means that members and organizations of whitchurchstouffville have benefited from the lions had work and fundrais- ing efforts for the past 60 years com munities need organizations like this one- hopefully they- will be- part of our community for many years to come what a positive feeling i had as i walked out of sdss on may 20 i hope members of bur community remember the good work the lions club does the next time they conduct their annual road toll i know i will michelle mackenzie stouffville help children pass through heavy turning traffic teenagers squealing in and out of millard and ninth line to go to and from high school they dont slow down i have followed everyones polite directions now im appealing to the newspa per please reinterview the decision makers maybe some media atten tion can help save childrens lives im sick at heart how much money is two stop signs compared to a childs life where is the petition for traffic lights or stop signs i want to sign it mary catherine ramsden stouffville whoa council dear editor open letter to mayor emmerson members of council whoa the taxpayers of whitchurch- stouffville are feeling very nervous over the constant goaround of capi tal projects we have just completed and dedi cated the second ice pad we see the pool the library and the new town hall are still on the agenda now add the distressing town offices i believe it is possible to hire a con sulting firm which would affirm all raised concerns imaginary or other wise- with such uncertainty surrounding our future as a whitchurch-stouf- fville municipality perhaps a plebiscite as suggested by mrs carol davis would be an excellent indicator of the will of the majority marion wells stouffville stouffville tribune patricia pappas publisher
