ip p 10 tribune september 27 1995 st people shapiro scares up a good time by kate gilderdale correspondent barry shapiro who conceived stouffvilles magic hill haunted adventure cheerfully admits hes scared of the dark and while his fear may be shared by others he has discovered that there are plenty of people who love to be terrified an advertisement for haunted hay ride franchises in the states which caught shapiros eye on a visit to arizona several years ago provided the catalyst for his frightful idea at first i thought who would want to go on a haunted hay ride he recalled but then we decided to go to a movie and all foe could find were scary ones and i began to realize that people really liked this stuff and kids television programs are scary so i was starting to think haunted hay rides made sense after all as owner of magic hill tree farms on ninth line just north of bloomington rd shapiro already had the perfect setting for his new venture which his ads refer to as 100 acres of prime unreal estate and his own credentials provided additional incentive im a magician so if anybody could do it i could i went to niagara falls to the haunted house there and it was pitch black i thought i dont like this its scary so i came back and said to our kids find out what haunted houses are like after further research the family agreed that they wanted to do something more creative using shapiros expertise in magic as a major ingredient we had a talking head on a table with no body and a headless body with arms that moved and we put all these things together that was four years ago and i said we should open the following year but my kids said its only april lets open in october the initial ideas come from shapiro but its michael debbie and jack who create the real chills and make them work said their father it took an awful lot of money and weve been improving it every year not only does the haunted adventure bring large crowds to the area it also offers local employment in a community where work for high school students can be hard to come by magic hill employs approximately 150 people most of them students each fall and shapiro estimates that 70 per cent of his staff have worked at the facil ity in previous years some are involved in the haunted adventure and the remainder work at the farm fun adventure for young families at the end of the season shapiro throws a party for staff members and bonuses are paid to those who show up for all their shifts we want to be good citi zens he stressed last year we started the farm fun adventure and proceeds from thanksgiving monday go to markham stouffville hospital the idea was to provide an alternative fall outing for families with young chil dren aged 3 to 8 for whom the haunted adventure would be too frightening activities include a maze games pony rides indoor and outdoor playgrounds and childrens entertainment hot dogs corn and drinks are available on site and shapiro uses local suppliers whenever possible evidence of his irrepressible sense of humor are everywhere from the gravestones which line the dri veway to the signs over the washrooms but you would expect nothing less from the man whose resume begins barry shapiro was born in toronto on january 1 1942 one day too late for a tax deduc tion but the right day to win a years supply of dia pers the haunted adventure includes a howling hay ride through the field of screams a haunted barn and a host of illusions that are both highly effective and genuinely scary this is entertainment for those with a strong constitution and
