st tribune june 21 1998 p 5 letters stouffville couple comes to defence of convicted man dear editor in regards to your papers contin ued reference to don macnaughton i feel i can keep quiet no longer first let me say mr macnaughton has 30 years teaching experience without reproach or incident all of a sudden he is declared a criminal on the testimony of two eightyearold boys whose parents permitted private interviews with crown attorneys and police officers the reports seem to take the posi tion that our justice system never makes mistakes i would remind you of david milgard guy paul morin and donald marshall i would like to declare my absolute belief in don macnaughtons innocence i still believe we were privileged to have mr macnaughton teach our grandson and our trust in don is still absolute i believe his teaching expe rience in our family gives me first hand knowledge of his integrity which i still maintain having witnessed some of the trial proceedings i was shocked to see the evidence of reliable stouffville citi zens who were present in the room at the time of the alleged incidents discounted as unreliable witnesses the seating arrangement was pre sented at court with the seating of the boys present showing it impossi ble for the alleged complaints to have taken place lb have this discounted as evi dence seemed to this layman unbe lievable this leaves every teacher club worker scout leader and social work er at risk if the presence of others in the room is not credible defence in such cases i would add that the teaching com munity and even some council mem bers in these communities are form ing the opinion expressed by clayton ruby that it is impossible for anyone faced with this type of charge to get a fair trial i regret that your reporters felt free to express themselves in so many erroneous ways i question who is supplying their facts i would add that it is the justice system that has put these boys through this traumatic experience not mr macnaughton gene and laura paisley stouffville reader suggests fine for leftover yard sale signs dear editor i would like to bring up two points that are bothering me and maybe other residents of stouffville one is why do we only have lawn waste garbage pickup once per month for the months of may and june but then weekly for july and august dont you think we have more waste to dispose of in the spring than in the summer months whoever makes the schedule for garbage obviously isnt a gar dener now for my second point garage and yard sales i love them as much as the next person but what upsets me are the people who have the energy to put their a wild world of western wear in your own backyard signs up but not to take them back down after this makes our town look messy and is also confusing to the garage sale hunter the following weekend i think there should be a law made to have your sign down by monday morning or a 25 fine would be put onto the offenders tax bill as the roads department would have to remove it to keep the town looking neat what do you think carol stevens stoufrville canada day prompts local student to write poem call us canadian we art canadian and proud
