p 4 tribune june 7 1995 good field of choice for riding st durhamyork is about to go to the polls traditionally this riding has been very active in provincial politics in the last election durhamyork resi dents lined up to cast their ballots in greater numbers than in every other riding in the province save one sixtytwo per cent of eligible voters cast their lots and many of those cast it larry oconnors way oconnor was never expected to win the last election he was a virtual unknown in the south end of the rid ing and didnt appear to make much of an impression during allcandidate debates he has however demonstrated himself to be an able local representa tive for his dedication he deserves at least our thanks and respect despite a slow start he has done much for our community there are two other major candi- our view dates julia munro and david mar quis who are also seeking our sup port and both appear eager willing and competent from our perspective this makes the voters job all that much harder there is a good field this time around and this bodes well for the riding according to the tribunes informal poll taken last week this contest is too close to call munro is leading but this may be a reaction to what has been seen across the province with respect to the poli cies of the progressive conservatives and the seeming decline in popularity of lynmcleod however the liberal david mar quis is not far off the pace and ocon nor is certainly not out of the race as of yet the undecided factor may be coming into play because there is such a strong field of candidates locally voters must take what little time remains to carefully examine each of the candidates and the party policies of each- voters must decide who will best represent them in the coming term at queens park this is a watershed election its outcome may decide whether this province will see new growth and prosperity or whether it will slip back there are positive attributes to all parties and to all the candidates but there are also negative aspects as well we owe it to ourselves to weigh our options carefully and make the decision we believe will lead us all in the right direction into the 21st cen tury where local candidates are con cerned it looks as though this riding will be a winner come june 8 stouffville tribune 6244 main st stouffville ont l4a1e2 905 6402100 905 6492292 fax than a speeding bullet theyre able to leap small buildings at a single bound theyre not birds planes or supermen instead theyre political party election volunteers and from my vantage point theyre the finest people in all the land campaign wdrkers come in all shapes sizes and col ors theyre from all walks of life election campaigns attract the old the young the rich and the poor alike election volunteers believe in democracy believe in canada and they believe in life in general these volunteers pound the pavement hit the phones put up signs stuff envelopes and talk boy do they talk the job in the liberal camp the progressive con servative camp and the new democratic party camp is sell the candidate sell the leader and sell the party if that doesnt work sell your soul if you have to throw in your first born to sweeten the pot so be it after all this is war early in the game cam paign volunteers learn to duck to fib to grin and throughout the whole ordeal beckon luck to ride on at least one shoulder meanwhile fake it till you make it becomes the rally cry on even the most well greased campaign i dont give a tinkers damn what party it is a sea soned election volunteer knows how it feels to put on a happy face even though the heart is breaking canvassers are like gam blers they know when to hold it know when to fold it know when to walk away and know when to run like the old gambler the can vasser keeps going till the deed is done canvassers put up with foul weather vicious dogs meanspirited voters and runnynosed kids campaign workers fill up on stale donuts and strong coffee faith hope and char ity becomes the nourish ment of the campaign campaign workers neglect their mates their kids and themselves theyll work for hours on end and not earn a off the record joan ransberry dime while oftentimes at the end of the day nobody bothers to say thank you still the volunteers soldier on its in their nature and in their blood they do it because they believe in democracy in the party in the leader and in the candi date do not i repeat do not underestimate some cam paigners while campaign workers expect the party the leader and the candidate to take a rational realistic fair sensible and pragmatic approach in the overall quest for public support a canvasser will do darn near anything for a vote good canvassers will go into overdrive simply to sal vage that one teeny weeny itsy bitsy vote the canvass er will stroke it poke it and in some cases hide it just in case somebody tries to to steal it while election campaigns attract the high and mighty send us your letters to the editor the tyibune welcomes your letters to the editor letters should be no more than 500 words in length and can be typed or neatly hand written your letters can be number on the masthead this page the knowitalls the dolit tles and the doomsayers most campaign workers are humble hard working and decent people i especially notice the neversaydie it-aint-over- tillthefatladysings volun teers the truth is they do much to keep this province this country and the free world on track in less than 72 hours ontario will have a new gov ernment i told you two weeks ago how i vote im not telling you again youre going to have to learn to pay attention the most critical segment of the campaign is now at hand after all eday is thursday in campaign talk this part of the campaign is called delivering the vote getting the vote out is the absolute it as for me i dont need to be coaxed bribed or threat ened i love to vote it may sound corny but i get very emotional when i enter the ballot box the act of voting reminds me that i am indeed a priv ileged individual not only do i live under the umbrella of freedom im a citizen of the finest country in the world and a great part of this can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of election campaign volun teers id like all campaign work ers from every political stripe to stand and take a bow once again you did a fine job and remember the only losers on thursday will be the people who dont vote my doodles not on the block whats wr0r mtu sammy hell have to stay in bep today- ill call the doctor a celebrity is a person who works hard all his life to become well known then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized fred allen as one who is perma nently stuck at the work ing hard stage a house hold name at the grocery store a nonentity in leaskdale my claim to fame has yet to be ratified much to no ones amaze ment none of my dubious doodles were solicited for the celebrity doodle auc tion which will take place this saturday at uxbridge community centre it seems and i should know ive been helping to organize it that i am sim ply not famous enough to justify even the modest reserve bid which covers the cost of framing these whimsical works of art and i have to admit that if i were a member of a dis criminating crowd i would be disinclined to shell out for my artistic handiwork and even less inclined to do so on account of my celebri ty status thus while it may have been a blow to my ego not to be considered it was also a relief imagine being at a do where your doodle was on the block and it turned out to be the only one nobody bid for youd end up having to pay someone to buy it back just to make it appear that at least one person in the audience had heard of you andor that your inept rendering was considered by an extremely charitable individual to display a modicum of artis tic merit its too reminiscent of those embarrassing moments at school when each side was picking a team for nctball rounders or whatever other form of statesponsored torture had been devised by the kates corner kategilderd ale gym teacher that day if my doodle has the selling power of my athletic prowess id prefer to remain in blissful igno rance on balance then i am more than happy to take a back seat to the likes of nana mouskouri timothy findley don cherry roberto alomar robert munsch ben wicks karen kain maya angelou george fox and bob rae be he by june 10 premier or just plain mister these are just a few of the generous and even more famous than me peo ple who have donated their time and artistry to this event which is being held to raise money for the yorkdurham heritage railway association and the 10th anniversary of the uxbridge celebration of the arts and although those attending will not have the questionable good fortune of bidding on one of my pedestrian pencillings i can confirm that i will be there in person the ulti mate wannabe celebrity whats more ill be putting in some bids of my own for the wonderful work donat ed by your actual famous people from the barenaked ladies to garth drabin- sky from honest ed to elwy yost there will be something to please every fan you can support two great causes and meet a historic celebrity of the future ill be the one wear ing the dark glasses to add to my celebrity cachet ill be accompanied by the longsuftering sup portive and equally famous mr wallcthcad
