st the candidates julia munro a new path by joan ransberry staff reporter durhamyork voters are taking a nononsense approach to the upcoming election the local pro gressive conservative pc candidate told the tribune the mood in the doortodoor campaign is indeed telling said durhamyork pc candidate julia munro voters are taking their responsi bility very seriously she said while residents of stouffville and such sur rounding hamlets as goodwood bloomington musselmans lake vandorf cedar valley lemonville and gormley want a provincial gov ernment that will help preserve and protect the individual communities local needs are not dominating the campaign said munro instead the voters are looking at the whole picture she said the main focus of the mike harrisled pc common sense campaign is that there has to be less government said munro taxation is too high yet we must protect vital services this is the cornerstone of the campaign she stressed harris is telling ontario that the first place the new democratic party government looked to satisfy its appetite for money has been your pay cheque it leaves each of us with fewer dollars to spend on the things we need for ourselves and our fam ilies said harris this has to stop we need to get our priorities straight munro agrees interest in the election is mounting people are seeing this as serious business said munro concerns most often cited at the doors are law enforcement classroom education and health care said the pc hopeful this time but the voter is focusing more on party platform and the candidate and less on the leader said munro i think thats a good sign she said when it comes to leaders brian mulroneys name is not coming up on this cam paign said munro neither the former prime minister nor the state of the federal pcs is a factor in the provincial election said munro people know the differ ence said munro the 1990 provincial election in durhamyork was a tight threefight race only 2000 votes separated the three candidates munro said its too early to tell if it will be a neckandneck race on june 8 but its not too early to suggest that in durham- york the contest is not featuring incumbent new democ rat larry oconnor its between the pcs and the liberals said munro munro is confident that her background has prepared her for an mpps job shes a universi ty graduate with more than 20 years experience as a secondary school teacher and as a business owner munro is married to john and the moth er of genevieve the tory candidate is a community activist who recently took strong exception to a plan to have durhamyork host a mega dump a resident of sutton munro chaired an umbrella group set up to fight the dump process munro was also a member of a georginabased antidump group the pc candidate is no stranger to agricultur al issues having lived on a farm for 22 years munro said she understands when a farmer expresses the need for a wellmanaged province the pcs came into the campaign with a game plan stressed munro she pointed out that the partys common sense revolution csr calls for a 30 per cent cut in provincial income tax rates and a 20 per cent reduction in nonpriority government spending the plans economic reforms will result in a balanced budget within five years csr tax cuts will stimulate our economy and help produce more than 700000 new jobs the pcs claim munro further stressed that the pcs will not cut health care spending its far too important as we all get older we are going to need it more and more the pcs are promising that class room funding for education will be guaranteed but savings can be found stressed munro the local candidate outlined the partys position on law enforcement people are concerned about communi ty safety particularly the increasing evidence of violent crime this is why funding for law enforcement and justice will be guaranteed said munro munro said she doesnt stand on ceremony and tries not to let difficulties stand in her way
