officials of the alzheimer society of york region asyr are out to make life easi er for victims and their families according to sue hart director of the day centre which pro vides daycare for clients with alzheimer and related disorders in york region the inddence of the disease will grow in direct proportion to the increasing lifes pan of canadians people are living longer and are healthier its going to put a big strain on the system as the baby boomers age said hart she said that alzheimer dis ease is a degenerative brain dis order which often leaves suffer ers physically sound but cogni- tively disabled she quoted statistics saying that 10 per cent of people over 65 will get alzheimer disease while that figure goes up to 40 per cent at age 85 consequently longer life spans mean a dramatic increase in the number of people afflicted the most severe symptom a profound loss of all higher brain functions resulting in complete dependency often dont occur until the victim is well advanced in years its going to tax the system mightily until it peaks said hart asyr president barbara wil son said her organization has worked to meet the needs of alzheimer families professional caregivers and the public with its day centre outreach programs and wandering persons reg istry but several needs still exist there is frustration in that there just isnt enough money as with any
