kate gilderdale correspondent despite a fierce storm the final game of the stanley cup finals and a 900strong local contingent bound for skydome wednesday nights meeting on the future of latcham gallery attracted a standing room only crowd the meeting was hosted by lynda giles chairman of the gallerys art committee and library board chairman doug alles it was held in response to recently announced cuts in town grants which would see the gallery lose all municipal funding by 1998 of the 82500 needed to operate the gallery the towns current contribution is 41500 down 5000 from 1992 with the remainder coming from fundraising and provincial grants council has announced that it will phase out its portion of the cost which would put the gallerys future in jeopardy giles noted this is one of only two pub liclyfunded galleries in york region the other is the mcmichael gallery in klein- berg established in 1979 by two local artists latcham gallery serves a broad area which includes uxbridge markham aurora and whitchurch-stouf- fville said giles we called this public meeting to make you aware that this is your gallery and we cant sur vive without you taking an active role the facility also faces the pos sibility of losing a 9500 grant from the ontario arts council she said and a meeting has been requested with the minis ter of culture and recreation and the arts council to try and maintain the present funding if we lose operating grants from the province and the municipality it will be neces sary for us to raise 13000 to continue at this level of service in 1994 giles said funding for cultural organi zations is usually the first thing to be cut in tough times artist john leonard told the audience he pointed out that while most communities boast sports facilities the arts often take a back seat athletics are important but cultural activities are impor tant too the majority of people here tonight are women most participants in sports programs tend to be young will appeal an ontario court judges decision which threatens its plans to place a 600acre land fill site in york region the iwa isnt at all happy with justice joseph obriens june 1 decision which found validity in york regions claim that the province should investigate options to waste management such as rail haul and incineration the attorney generals office has decided to take advantage of its 30day right to appeal and notified the region this week that it will appeal obriens decision in toronto on june 30 said yorks environmental lawyer ian blue blue said the judges decision to send the case to trial is a giant step backward for the iwa a decision which could ultimately undo its entire process and thats exactly what the region is fighting for in its two- pronged case against the provincial crown agency which argues the region is discriminated against this is a great victory for york region rather than trying to persuade the ndp that its dump search process is unfair we can now work on persuading an independent and impartial judge blue said the entire matter will now depend on the attorney generals per formance and accompanying arguments to a judge when asking for the appeal blue said the only question is should the attorney general be allowed to appeal and this is usually dealt with summarily on the basis of first impressions by the judge hearing the appeal application blue said a court date giving york the opportunity to argue its case has not yet been set if the province is unsuccessful in its appeal york will try to con vince a judge that the iwa refuses to investigate options to land fill and is discriminating against residents of york region brand new 1993 topaz 2 dr sport best price iii 0b lease for jiymo 24 months brand new 1993 ranger
