dated april 24 the article was in the home and garden section of the paper titled everything you always wanted to know about opening your pool this season the article for the most part was not bad but the part i have some trouble with is pool water 101 water chemistry i am the operator of a- 160000 gallon class a swimming pool and have taken pool water chemistry courses so i have an idea of what pool water chemistry should be i would have to say the person who supplied the article also supplies all the chemicals you could possibly want for your pool and more allow me to title this water chemistry 102 the article said for the water ph range to be 7276 this range is ok but i use 7278 and target for 75 for bather comfort ifthephis too high the chlorine effect is low ered the water can become cloudy and you may get a shorter filter run if the ph is too low you can encounter corrosion and pitting of concrete as well as staining vinyl liners can wrinkle permanently for the total alkalinity the arti cle recommended to test once per month and maintain between 60- 125 ppm parts per million once per month is recommended for testing but i would recommend testing total alkalinity once per week as total alkalinity is the gov ernor of ph ta should be main tained between 80120 ppm low ta will cause ph bounce as well as other destructive imbalances to your pool high ta will cause ph to drift to 84 it will also cause cloudy water and short filter runs calcium hardness should be test ed once per month and be main tained between 200300 ppm not 2001000 ppm if calcium hardness is main tained too high your pool can become cloudy experience reduced circulation and short filter runs as well as scaling if on the other hand the calcium drops too low the water will become aggressive and eat away at concrete and grout the water will strip metal and you may experience staining therefore it wouldnt hurt to check the hardness of the water you are adding to your pool periodically to maintain chlorine in an out door pool you must maintain a bank of stabilizer in the water chlorine residuals that have been stabilized with isocyanuric acid stabilizer last 3 to 5 times longer in the pool the threshold of stabi lization is 25 ppm and over 50 ppm little stabilization occurs the article had mentioned main taining the chlorine at 13 ppm these levels are ok however there are no rules on how high the chlorine levels may go chlorine residuals should not however drop below 05 ppm or there is not enough free available chlorine ready to do a proper kill if you maintain the chlorine level around 15 ppm there is plenty of free available chlorine in the pool any higher than this is a waste of money the only time you may want to run the fc higher than 15 is if you have a heavy bather load fc should be tested daily more often if pool is used heavily gord thompson stouffville
