pl8tftlbufmxv 5193 st stouffville analysis chuck phillips classact in hockey community bruce stapley correspondent it was somehow fitting that chuck phillips got to coach the past and present assortment of uxbridge bruins which went up against the former ontario champion stouffville clippers squad recently at the sold out benefit in memory of the late dan mcneil for phillips it was his swan song having tendered his resig nation as bruins general man ager a few days earlier the night had class written all over it and class was what phillips always want ed the bruins to be all about which can be a tough assign ment at the junior c level a brand chuck phillips of hockey in which some hockey purists like to cynically suggest the c stands for cement phillips was the seasoned hockey man the guy with the connections who was willing to travel far and wide and to dip into his own pocket to make the bruins a success not that the rest of the bruins executive wasnt equally committed its just that phillips knew the ins and outs of junior hockey hav ing been involved in one way or another for so many years he had twice come on the scene when the team was going nowhere once as coach in the late 1970s and then again as gm in 1988 both times the teams fortunes improved maybe he should have stepped down after the bruins won the central league cham pionship and the eastern ontario crown in the spring of 1991 had he known what lay ahead both in his personal life and consequently for the bru ins he may well have he told me again and again that he must shoulder the responsibility for the teams dismal 199192 season his marriage had broken up and like the rest of us who suddenly find our world rent asunder by such an upheaval he wasnt his usual effervescent effective self he was also forced to sweat out a nasty economic down turn which took his successful auto supplies wholesale busi ness and knocked it about like a sail boat in a monsoon things seemed to be coming back on track for the bruins this past season but the wheels eventually fell rightoff the cart at playoff time it had been quite evident for most of the season that this was not a cohesive team but rather a col lection of talented but unmoti vated players the sense of continuity had been lost proving once again that you can put a bunch of star athletes out there on the ice or playing field but if they dont perceive themselves a team theyll flounder the local flavor was gone and most of the players didnt have that sense of community required to win at the junior c level phillips along with the other hard working members of the bruins executive could just shake their heads in the end as much as phillips always wanted to win he was just as determined to produce a good product something the players the executive and the fans could be proud of for him the brains were providing the peo ple of uxbridge and stouffville with an inexpensive night out he told me after the benefit game that the match was what small town hockey is all about a worthwhile event for the kids to go to play or watch he looked back on his years with the bruins and said he was happy to have been able to help provide something for the kids to do on a friday night im sure glad theyve got a place to go on a friday night he said it does my heart good to look out there and see all those young faces as a journalist who likes to look behind the score and into the human side of the world of sport i thoroughly enjoyed dealing with phillips over the past four and a half years there was no big ego no rant ing and raving when the bru ins lost and no whining when i might write something other than a glowing review of a bru ins game he never failed to express his unending gratitude for the cov erage the bruins received in the tribune he realized how important it is to have the press working with you when you are trying to promote a community project which costs big bucks to run and requires undying fan sup port while phillips leaves the bra ins at a time when things are once again a little unsettled his own life has bounced back and hes quite confident hes survived the storm hell now go on to new ven tures in life maybe even get involved with another junior club although there is now anoth er interest in his life who is going to provide heavy duty competition for the game of hockey and the brains oh theyll survive just fine nothing like a changing of the guard to turn things around sometimes photobruce stapley award winners at the whitchurchstouffville girls hockey association banquet sunday
