p4 tribune march 241993 st stouffville home show cancellation unfortunate f nterest has waned for a home show in stouffville could it be that easter weekend was a death knell for the show could it be that businesses simply dont have the money to invest in a weekend in an arena could it be that the reces sion has taken so great a hold on local businesses that sup porting the chamber of com merce venture would be dis astrous it is impossible to say but with just over 30 booths sold for the april show it is no wonder the chamber of commerce pulled the plug one must wonder however other communities in the area succeed with the home show format year after year what is the secret it is hard to tell but one thing is for certain it is a safe bet that there is relief on all fronts that the chamber did nt get its wish for a perma nent home show floor at the rec centre am stop refugee heartbreak involving children hp heres nothing worse than the thought of splitting up a family wrenching a small innocent child from the arms of the two most important people in his life how heartbreaking if not downright unacceptable for a mother and father to be forced to leave their children behind thats why young refugee couples who wish to immigrate to canada should be prohibit ed from having children until they know for sure whether canadas immigration depart ment will grant them legal sta tus its admirable and coura geous that couples from other countries want to start their new lives together in canada a country which welcomes immigration and makes it an important respected and inte gral part of its diverse culture but to arrive in a foreign country and begin a family before knowing for sure it wont later be threatened by deporta tion laws is irresponsible and careless on both sides canadas immigration act which allows deportation of parents of canadianborn chil dren should be changed the law should clearly state that couples arriving in cana da with the intention of claim ing legal refugee status cannot kibble bits start a family until they hear whether or not their claim is accepted or refused some may argue this a deplorable suggestion one which robs a refugee couple of their rights to begin a family but if a couple leaves their home to begin a new hfe some where else they must be aware of the consequences of their actions beginning a family when its unclear if their future is secure is both reckless and borderline disrespectful there is a problem in this country that has arisen because illegal refugees become pregnant and have children once they arrive in canada its considered a safe venue by many refugees and one many explore to strengthen their claims theres a controversial birthright issue that arises because canadianborn chil dren of refugees cannot legally be deported although their parents can canadian law should end this problem for- the sake of those innocent children by refusing any claim for legal status if the couple has a child before paper work is complete if an illegal immigrant has a child in canada while waiting to be granted legal status deportation should be manda tory wouldnt this save a lot of unnecessary heartbreak for children the breakup of fami lies and a whole lot of taxpay ers money stouffville tribune publisher general manager editorinchief advertising director business manager operations when one of us stumbles down stairs to make the early morning cup of tea without which life as we know it would grind to a halt the milk bag will always contain an amount of two per cent barely adequate to coat the bottom of a single mug an inquisition into this sad state of affairs quickly degener ates into an acrimonious argu ment in which blame is hurled indiscriminately in all direc tions everyone it appears left the bag at least half full replacing a milk bag may seem a trifling matter unworthy of such heated debate but it is best undertaken when one is fully awake otherwise little kates corne sjlfx 1-1- rivulets of milk from the badly hacked opening will dribble down into the jug only to reap pear as a flood all over the table when you upend it for the last precious drop once that mess is cleaned up a new bag must be wrestled from the fridge as you remove the tenacious little plas tic tab from the carrier three bags slither onto the floor where theyre quickly joined by a pre cariously balanced dish contain ing an aging lemon the milk bag controversy alas is but one of many trials which dog family life in the late 20th century who among us has not been faced with the empty toilet roll syndrome the mystery of the disappearing comics section or the taping over of the video being saved for a rainy day which now unaccountably con tains a whole slew of ren and stimpy cartoons is there a family member any where who has not engaged in fudging statistics when it comes to the question of where all the cookies have gone will no one accept responsibility for the chip crumbs on the basement rug or the flood created by the connec tion of a careless foot with the cats water dish trying to figure out whodunit is a pointless exercise which will render you apoplectic without getting you any closer to the truth when your cup of frustra tion runneth over you can be sure it wont contain the milk of human kindness
