i- tribune february 3 1993 p3 gormley residents want safe roads signs streetlights tracy kibble staff reporter twentyseven gormley resi dents are appealing to local politicians this week to help keep their children safe from traffic the rural ratepayers signed a petition asking officials to close off the union stwoodbine ave intersection which is fre quently used as a driver bypass route to avoid the busy stouffville rdwoodbine ave intersection officials were expected to dis cuss the issue last night but will likely follow staff recom mendations not to close the intersection off until a traffic study is done a staff report states the traf fic study would cost about 1500 but should be under taken to justify the residents claim and to determine the number of vehicles that use the residential streets as a bypass route the report states several dis advantages to the closure including forcing local resi dents to use stouffville road when heading south on wood bine staff suggests a proper turn ing circle would solve the prob lem if there was sufficient room on the roadway for such an alternative measure it would cost about 3500 to close union st staff says the residents are also asking council to consider installing no through traffic signs at the entrances of union and elm sts at stouffville rd and to install one more streetlight on union a cost of about 500 the matter will be discussed from the heart jean barclay and mayor fran salnsbury raise the flag monday jean is the president of the whltchurch- at the town offices to proclaim february heart month stouffville chapter of the heart and stroke foundation keep politics off the police beat says lome hurst kate gilderdale correspondent i think the politicians have got to start listening to what the large majority of people are saying stouffville resident lome hurst who recently retired from the metropolitan toronto police force after 32 years ser vice believes politicians are out of touch with the average citi zen on the contentious subject of law and order many of his colleagues said hurst feel embattled and frus trated by increasing govern ment intervention and what they see as lack of support for a difficult and at times danger ous job at one time we used to pride ourselves there was no political interference he noted now were becoming like american departments where police are handcuffed to such an extent they cant do their job when he joined the force in 1960 i think there was a much closer relationship with the public these days he said sos not to blame wells from page 1 disgruntled residents was not a protest meeting but a session where people could ask questions all the questions were the same where is the money coming from that is what is on every ones mind she said wells denied the group will encourage taxpayers to withhold a portion of taxes if an increase is passed at council next month that would be an individual decision we would not encourage civil disobedience wells said wells also said mayor fran sainsburys recent media state ments that the towns morale is down has nothing to do with exterior reasons or outside forces morale of staff is broken down because of within the town its a quantity of innerself and solidarity wells said nothing we could say or do would harm staff morale if things were good within in town wells added we still have time to say no tax increase for 1993 and that will be what the sos executive will work on in the next few weeks she said safety first grade 6 stu dents sarah smith and zach raybouid help grade 1 pupils off the bus in the firstran- sponsored bus evacuation seminar put on at st marks catholic school last week photosteve somerville weve almost become captive to the police car and the radio and just one call after another hurst who was a monitor in the metro police association feels the organization received short shrift from queens park during protests over new firearms legislation the legis lation which requires officers to file a report each time they draw their guns was the straw that broke the camels back the police are being legislated to death i think i can speak for most police officers in saying they felt very frustrated with the fact that the ndp would not even sit down to discuss our con cerns their the ndps atti tude was my mind is made up dont confuse me with the facts several of hursts friends have been shot and killed while on duty and on one occasion a man wielding a one- gallon wine bottle threatened to kill him and he was forced to draw his own gun i was very scared but what i found amazing was that all the citizens on the street where this man lived backed me up current hiring policies have also caused considerable fric tion said hurst were faced with the same problem as the fire department in having to put women and minorities ahead of qualified white male officers im from the old school 1 believe the best qualified should get the job and if a minority candidate is well qualified thats fine youth crime is another con stant concern he noted calling the young offenders act the worst piece of legislation ever passed by parliament he said it simply doesnt provide an adequate deterrent for young criminals at 16 or 17 you can drive a car work and pay taxes if you can do that you can pay for a crime kids under 12 know they can shoplift without being charged hurst also takes a dim view of the special investigations unit one of howard mortons first comments upon being appoint ed as head of the unit was that the police have got to stop shooting shoplifters to my knowledge ive never heard of one shoplifter being shot to say that was highly irresponsible and inflammato ry the unit he said wants to ignore the charter of rights for police officers were supposed to have less rights than the citi zens were protecting some lawyers insist that the police shouldnt investigate themselves yet lawyers inves tigate lawyers and doctors investigate doctors he pointed out when they passed the char ter of rights i can recall a com mentator saying that the only ones who would benefit were criminals and lawyers and i fully agree a keen bowler and golfer hurst looks forward to a busy and active retirement and plans to do part time work here and there im learning to sleep in until 7 in the morn ing he concluded cheerfully no monthtomonth tax plan from page 1 sury budget considerably panizza also said the department is busy trying to collect taxes from more than 100 local properties currently under powerbf sale i think we should implement changes that would keep tax dol lars down panizza suggested to officials ward 2 councillor stephen bellerby said the change wouldbe an insult to constituents bookkeeping skills these people own homes and hold mortgages i think they are capable of looking three months in advance bellerby said bellerby suggested it was a waste of time debating an issue that creates more paperwork for staff prentice however took exception to bellerbys statement that people have money in advance i dont know what homeowner youve been talking to but most i know dont have much money in advance he said prentice said the town would benefit in the long run if a new system was at least investigated especially if tax dollars started to roll in faster because of the change we need to look at ways to make this work prentice said prentice asked officials to support his bid to have staff investi gate monthbymonth installments its workload and costs but council defeated the request kids earn extra
