saturday the community came to pay their final respects to walter d atkinson the founder and builder of the towns most famous landmark the stouffville flea market a man of vision he gave this a place in history born in scarborough on march 26 1905 he received his elementary edu cation at ss 20 in cedar grove his high school days were spent in walter atkinson founded and built the stouffville flea market markham and during this time walter played for the ontario hockey associa tion intermediates he served his carpenters apprentice ship under the guidance of mr garnet williamson one of markhams finest builders and later became manager of the markham planning mill in 1931 walter married leona sell ers and they had two daughters mari on wells and isobel evans he accepted a position of rural dis tributor for the imperial oil co at this time but when his bulk station closed in 1939 he was transferred to belleville as rural salesman in 1943 50 years ago walter came to whitchurchstouffville where he bought a garage and implement busi ness from frank baker he rebuilt the old todd carriage works into a thriving international harvester implement wd atkinson business in 1950 and sold it to cy bellman in 1957 walter attended the reich school of auctioneering in mason city iowa he then returned home to begin what would be the greatest project of his lifetime the stouf fville stockyards locat ed in the old curling rink on park dr n this was a facility where the local farmers brought their livestock for sale every saturday morn ing when the business outgrew these limited quarters
