please see page 4 vol 105 no 42 a metroland community newspaper wednesday october 20 1993 28pages province wasting monfey mayor tracy kibble staff reporter the provincial government continues to waste taxpayers money while forcing restraint on everyone else charged mayor fran sainsbury this past week the mayor said its appalling that the town and many other englishonly municipalities and agencies receive duplicate pamphlets reports and pro gram information from queens park one in english and one in french the mayor said the province shouldnt send out information in both official lan guages unless the agency receiving the documents has requested it in both she added its the legislation that needs to be changed and insists it should be in order to save thousands of v dollars in tax money and tnousands of trees to prepare each of the documents which often are printed on unrecyclable material this is not the first time the issue has come up at town council staff informed officials that the town had sent its concerns to four provincial ministers and ministries about six months ago but has yet to receive a response the mayor said the provinces high- please see page 3 hydro opens information centres on substation a series of public information centres have been set up for local residents concerned with the ontario hydro plans to run new transmission lines and a new transformer station in the area hydro has announced the centres are to let the public know about developments in the greater toronto area transmission reinforcement project which would see a 230000 volt substation located between uxbridge and stouf- fville members of the team select ing a site will be on hand to discuss plans to locate the sta tion in the area here are the dates and times wednesday oct 20 good woodcommunity centre thursday oct 21 uxbridge arena thursday oct 28 stouf- fville legion hall the information centres will be open from 3 pm to 9 pm on all dates for general review and comments if you wish to preview the displays and speak to hydro representatives the centres will be open at 2 pm contact enza cancilla at 592- 3932 for information council barrier comes down permanently on loretta cr the barrier separating the two sections of loretta crescent has been permanently removed and loretta crescent and area residents displayed an admirable show of neighborly compromise in mak ing this decision last week officials lauded tuesday im impressed and very pleased at the attitude of the residents they are all certainly being good neigh bors said ward 6 councillor ken prentice who attended a special meeting to help resolve a construc tion traffic problem which has separated the old and new sections of loretta cr for the past several months ward 5 councillor bob ancheril who chaired the meeting said the residents were practicing good neighbors week when they reached a compromise to alleviate problems on both sides of the issue the town had placed a barrier between the estab lished and the newlyconstructed sections of the resi dential area to prevent heavy construction traffic from passing through neighborhood streets but residents of the newer section complained the barrier compromised their childrens safety because buses were not allowed to turn around at the barrier and dropped the school children off on busy durham road 30 officials had removed the barricade last week until a final decision could be reached with residents ifciii jim during the meeting residents voted unanimously to remove all barricades and pass a bylaw restricting construction traffic to durham road 30 the town will also post signs directing construction traffic to use durham road 30 public works director paul whitehouse said it is hard to prohibit construction traffic under the high way traffic act but signs preventing heavy trucks can be erected he said the traffic will be monitored by the bylaw department and residents are encour aged to write down the licence plate numbers of any construction vehicle not adhering to the proper route tracy kibble i r i i i i i i i s
