v jc3 r p2 weekender october 2 1993 w st rmmmmmymmmi spartans encounter smooth waters tami waters remembers the first few practices she and co- coach bill mcknight put their stoufiville district secondary school spartans boys fastball team through last spring the boys were more than a little skeptical that a female firstyear business studies teacher would be able to teach them anything about the game some of them had been playing at the rep level for more than a few years but the doubters quickly became converts when tami took the ball and demonstrat ed proper softball pitching form to the teams pitching prospects for tami the subsequent york region high school championship won by the spartans was just another in an endless string of fastball titles she has known as a coach and a player since she first took up the game at the all star level in oshawa at the age of 10 her latest triumph came when the oshawa midget girls team she coached won the regional provincial and canadian national fastball championships this pas sum mer going 210 in the three competitions tami who was born and raised and still resides in courtice just east of oshawa played on the pickering junior girls team that captured the national junior girls title in 1986 a pitcherinfielder tami then went on to play senior ladies ball for the cobourg squad which won the provincials and placed third sport at the nationals in british columbia in 1990 she was also picked up by the oakville team which con tested the senior ladies title in newfoundland in 1989 since 1986 tami has been coaching at the midget girls rep level in oshawa her ability to pass on her own knowledge and skills has been testified to by the fact that several of her players have gone on to receive fastball scholarships at universities in the united states as for tamis own education al background she attended niagara university in lewis- ton ny on a fastball scholar ship as a commerce under graduate completing her master of education degree in 1991 she took her first teaching job at the stoufiville high school last fall she helped coach the schools junior girls basket ball team to the regional semi finals last fall before leading the boys fastball team to vic tory the next spring this year tami has taken over the senior girls hoops squad and will return to coach the sdss boys ball team next spring despite her own athletic proficiency tami has no desire to become a physical education teacher ive never had any aspirations to be a phys ed teacher i love teach ing business she told me tuesday while watching the sdss spartans senior boys volleyball team in action the coaching is my time away from the class room it gives me a nice balance she enjoys coaching at the high school level but is well aware of the difference between coaching school teams and national level rep fastball squads here school has to come first the team is just a part of their overall school program but with the rep teams ball comes first you work your summer job around it she feels her youth along with her personal athletic successes have made it possi ble to gain the respect of the high school teams she coach es the kids can relate to me and they respect me because ive done it she still smiles however when she remembers how the sdss boys fastball team came to find out she was for real last spring it was pret ty funny they were a little unsure of me but after a few practices they caught on that i knew what i was talking about while tami hasnt played ball herself for several years she said she may return at some time in the future i might get back into it at the senior a level but it wouldnt be as a pitcher i put too much wear and tear on my arm in past seasons spartan girls downed field hockey and hoops the
